When Rees shook hands with Kezia he little thought what a flutter she was in. But he remembered Mally’s advice apd the necessities of his household, and tried to gather up his wits for the emerzeacy of his case. When he looked at Kezia in an absent sort of way he found himself wondering what sort of a thiog » wife was, and whether she would be more or less troublesome than a housekeeper. By degrees he took to admiring her round, tair face and comely fizure, and ali of a sndden a vision of his youth flitted before his cloudy mind. He suddenly burst out laughing.

This insidious disease must always be met promptly. Some children entirely escape it, while others, with no more ex- posure, and the same care, are attacked, It is usually preceded by a cold, though it of- ten makes its appearance unattended. The first syinptom the mother notices isa dry, hard cough; prompt action 13 then neces- sary. The little one must be carried, care- fully wrapped, toa warm room, and hasty movements are essential if the fire is out. Medicines must be administered without delay, and the oil rubbed over the throat and chest, ax well as given internally. If the attack be severe, the throat will be filled with mucus, and the breathing loud and laberious, in less than thirty minutes after the first symptom is noticed, . What thoughts pass threugh the minds of the anxious friends! None sure that the angel of death is not hovering near. If necessary to give an emetic, do so promptly. Hive syrup, lobelia, syrup of ipecac, alum grated in molasses, or if nothing better offers, tobaeve juice will do. Do not give much ; severe attacks of croup are very weakening without useless vomit- ng. However, it is better to weaken the little one with emetics, which clear ‘the throat, than to see him choke and gasp fer breath. It is better to give the medicines in small deses a few moments apart. Keep the child very warm ; put the feet in warm water, if possible, and rub all over the cheat. If the cough becomes looser, and perspiration starts, the little patient is doing well. If these symptoms are absent, work briskly; it may all depend on prompt- ness. If, after the first emotic has acted, the cough does not ‘*break,” sew very thin

No one can be sure that the little one is safe until after daybreak; then, if the hoarse- ness continues, beware. Unless the mother, or person in charge, knows her own ability to grapple with this destroyer, it would be well to calla physician should the cough not break before nightfall.
