It is not mannish to wish to wear a suitable dress for walking and exercising. to get the high- est education the land affords and to have free access to all paying occupa- tions. It is only human. The mistake the Parkhursts of the community make is to say that these reasonable human wants arise only from a desire to imi- tate men. Man is not such a perfect creature, as far as he has got. that women should want to imitate him. We only want freedom such as he enjoys, and we are going to have it.

A highly successful steam laundry is eonducted by a woman, Mrs. M. A, Weaver, in Washington city. I have often wondered why women do not oft- ener go into the laundry business. It seems an occupation well fitted to their quick eyes and deft fingers in these days when steam and machinery do the hard- est of the work. Why American women should starve on 10 cents a day at sweatshop sewing and let hundreds of heathen Chinamen come in and get thousands of dollars away from them at the laundry business is more than I! ean understand. In almost every good sized town in this country there is an opening for a good laundry run by wo- men. Families would gladly welcome the opportunity to get their laundry work done out of the house if they could have assurance that it would be well and reasonably done.
I have always said that women ought to have charge of the street cleaning of cities. I am glad to find that there are persons in authority who think so too. It gives me pleasure to find that Miss Cynthia M. Westover has been appoint- ed one of the inspectors of street clean- ing in New York city. Street Coma sioner George E. Waring, Jr.. was ‘ie man brave enough to beeak axyzy from traditionary politics and offer this plice to Miss Westover. She is pectliarly fir- ted for her work.
