Cugar CoaL.—The day of cheap fuel for Winnipeg has arrived. From the mines of the Northwest we are to be supplied during the coming winter with excellent coal at an unpre- cedentedly low rate fur this country, Ar- rangements have been made for a large supply of Saskatchewan coal of a superior quality, which will be delivered to Winnipeg consumers ai the low rate of $7.50 per ton, and if lower freight rates than at present granted are ob- tained, the price ‘vil) be still further reduced.

Dr. Conroy, who arrived home frem Tig- nish on Saturday night, reports that the potato bug has appeared at that place. It has already done much damage on several farms, and unless effective means for immediate ex- termination are taken the crops will be ruined. Farmers in the West should therefore be on the alert, and immediately the bug appears in the crops, apply the most effectual remedy— Paris green. If the greatest precautionary measures are not taken the loss cannot fail to be very great. The Dr. also reports the oat crops to be mach damaged by the recent heavy rain.

As a supplement to the report of the Depart- ment of Marine, there has been published a list of vessels on the registry books of the Dominion, on the 3lst of December last The total number of vessels remaining on the re- gister on the 3lst December, inc!uding old and new vessels, sailing vessels, steamers and barges, was 7,374, measuring 1,267,394 regis- ter tonnage, being an increase of 62 vessels and 6,617 tons register, as compared with 1882. The nuwher of new v:ssels built and registe: ed in the Dominion during the last year was 374, measuring 74,090 tong regjster. Estimating the yalue of the new tonnage at $45, gives a value of $3,304,950 for the new veersels.

Consecration of the Cemetery.

Tue beautiful grounds recently purchased fora Roman Catholic cemetery were, yes- terday, solemnly consecrated by His Lord- ship Bishop McIntyre, assisted by several priests. The day was all that could be desired, and at three o'clock, the hour ap- pointed for the service, a large gathering of persons assembled to witness the cere- mony. At the opening of the service His Lordship took his place on an elevated dias and delivered a discourse suited to the occasion, and in his own lucid and forcible style explained the significance of the cere- mony about to be perfurmed. The solemn rite was then proceeded with, the musi:. 1 part of the proceedings being rendered by the choir of St. Danstan’s Cathedral. The impressive ceremony was concluded about 4.30. A collection amounting to over $200 was taken up on the grounds.

The Black Snake Cure for Rheu- matism.

The Danbury, Conn., Sun a few weeks ago contained an account of the black snake cure for rheumatism. Another case of ine flammatory rheumatism is being treated in the same way in Danbury. The patient is Mrs. H. W. Stevens, wife of the Chief Engineer of the Danbury fire department. The mode of treatment is to take the snake, which is about five feet long, and wind it about the patient’s leg. After remaining for twenty minutes he is taken off and put inabox. This is done two and sometimes three timesa day. A month ago Mrs, Stevens,could walk only with the aid of crutches. She is now able to walk with a cane, and entertains strong hopes of ultimate recovery. At times the snake will bring his restrictive powers into play, and give a painful squeeze to the leg. A pin thrast into him cures him of this. Several times he has bitten his handlers,but no harm has followed.

The rescve of the few survivors of the Greely Arctic exploring expedition has been the occasion for loud and general protests from all quarters against any further gacri- fice of life in the attempt to reach the Pole jor penetrate the secrets of the adjacent ice-

bound region. The story of the survivors is no new one. It has been so frequently repeated in connection with polar re- search, that to venture upon an expedi- tion of that nature under the ordin- ary conditions, is very like suicide. The chances at all events are decidedly against safe return. And yet such is the indomitabie spirit of investigation, that no sooner do the shattered and decimated rem- nants of one expedition return, having been saved as by a miracle from the horrors
