Che mystery of the identity of Max- well, the murderer of C. A. Preller, is cleared at last. On the 23rd inst., his father, Samuel N Brooks, of Hyde, Kng., called at the jail When the old man saw Maxwell he cried out: “Hugh! Hugh! It isindeed you!” The _ pris- oner rose, and for the first time, seemed to lose contro! of himself. “It is, father, itis I,” said he Then, immediately controlling himself, he stopped and sat down on a chair. The father addressed his son, and said: “Ob,Hugh, you had better be dead than here. Your mother’s health is gone and the family ruined!” and, sobbing, tell into the armsof the guard. Maxwell sat in his chair looking annoyed, and, but for the first recognition of his exhibited no emotion whatever. Mr. Brooks afterwards said that he had no doubt whatever but that his son was in- sane. He said Hugh left home last January, ostensibly to go to Dublin, siace which time the family bad heard nothing of him.
