Our Visitors. Charlottetown is highly favored this week in having as its guests the clergymen and lay members of the New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Conference of the Methodist Church of Canada. Some of the lead- ing men of the church in Canada, Rev. Dr. Carmae, General Superintendent, Rev. Dr.Sutherland, Rev. Dr. Sprague, Rev. Dr. Stewart, and Rev. Dr. Pope will be in attendance. Thanks to the itiuerent system of the Methodists our citizens will have the pleasure of see- ing many familiar faces. Former pastors of the two churches in this city,among whom we may mention those known to the later generation, Revs. Dr. Lathern, Reid, Shenton, Steele, Campbell, Tippett, Harrison and Rice will receive an especill W81‘ come. We are sure, however, we voice the sentiments of the whole Christian community when we bid all the mem- bers of the conference a hearty wel- come to Charlottetown. That welcome has been extended already in a more practical way. Both clergy and lay- men have been reheived into hou- ses, not only of the Methodists, but of all Evangelical denominations, which is an evidence of the good will and in- terest of the community regarding the gathering now to be held. The Con- ference proper doea not begin its ses- sions until Friday morning. The sta' tioning committee and the committee on Conference Statistics, however, will convene this morning, and the special ministerial session will be held this afternoon. We shall keep our readers informed of the deliberations of the Assembly from day to day and have no doubt there will be much of inter- esttorecord. It has heenaaid that the Presbyterians represent the intel- lectual side of Christian work and the Methodists the emotional. This may be true to a large extent Never thelefl it will and has been found that the Methodist Confer-paces have always been -for deliberative talent and vigorous yet courteous dc bate. We need only express in con- clusionour hope that the deliberations of the Conference will tend to the advancement of religion and the pros‘ perity of the Methodist Church.

As no doubt many of our readers would like to know something more of the lead- ing clergyman of the Methodist Confer- ence now gathered in this city, we begin today the publication of the first of a series of sketches to appear during the conference. Th8 RSV. Henry Daniel, of St. John, a man who has lived to be nearly as old as John Wesley was when he passed P°°°°‘°117 050%. who has spent over sixty years in the Methodist ministry in England. Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Is- land, constitutes a notable figure in any gathering. And when, in addition to this, he possesses peculiar mental qualities he is apt to be as distinguished among his peers as Saul was among his brethren. Such a person is the gentleman who is commonly called “Father Daniel.” For about the last twenty years he has been a supernumerary minister,and the greater part of that time has made St. John his home. Twenty years ago, and even less, there were nothing but heavy circuits in Maritime llethodism, which required the vigor of strong men, and comequently ministers were compelled to retire from active work when their physical powers manifested any signs of falling off, 1,]. though their preaching ability was un- impaired. Now St. Andrews, Newcastle and other charges are available for half- invalided men who are fully equal to the work required of them. If such easy fields of labor had been available years ago, Mr. Daniel is not the only minister who would have been better for regular work and the church would have greatly profited by his wise experience. Yet no one ever thinks of him in confereutial gatherings or in committees as a super- nnmerary minister. There he is always in the active work. Plenty of other minis- tees understandrules of debate and points of order better than he, but no one ever manifests a keener interest than he in matters connected with the church. Oc- casionally he gives his opinion as if he had spoken the last word that could be said on the subject. Usually, however, his remarks show that he is ope :1 to light and convifition. Rev. Mr. Daniel is well read, especially in works belonging to Methodist theology, history and polity. Even at his age he finds great delight in conning the pages of some recent publication. 1“ Pnlclling he was inclined to be a little diifuse, and his sermons did not al- ways observe a true proportion between

gularly in his earlier days; yet nearly all his sermons contained eloquent passages which held the strict attention of his hearers. As a preacher he had many ardent admirers. In several circuits——A notably up the St, John River--he was permitted to take part in extensive re- vivals of religion—revivals, the far reach- ing influences of which have come down to our days. To those days of blessing he looks back with great pleasure. He still possesses a voice of remarkable clear- ness and strength, and during conference sessions it will be listened to with respect. As an administrator of church policy Mr. Daniel has been a strong man. Quarterly Boards always found him able to hold the lines of authority. Some

And new manifestations of church work and life are needed to meet the changed order of things.
