ALEXANDRIA, Aug. 28.

The ironclad Monitour has shelled the enemy out of Mandara bétween Ramleh and Aboukir. The enemy had taken up their position there, and were making new entrenchments ; the firing from the iron- clad was sharp and decisive, and the shells ;800n succeeded in dislodging the enemy. | The troops are rapidly advancing towards Tel el-Kebir ; but no news of any decisive | engazement has yet bern received.

It is about fifteen miles east-of Zaga- | zig, and on the line between that place and | Ismailia. The Actions at Magfar, and at Mahata are nowknown to have been much more disasterous to the enemy than was suppos- ed. Fuller accounts show that the enemy suffered terribly in the action. Arabi’s Chief Engineer and military adviser has been captured by the British.

Five transport ships with troops from India, arrived at Suez to-day.

Kafreldwar has been considerably rein- forced, and further reserve forces are being formed in Bombay for immediate transpor- tation to Egypt.

RUSSIA AND AUSTRIA. Terrible Riots ab Madras,

Special to the Examiner. Lonpon, Aug. 28.

News has been received here that Austria is pressing forward the demands of Russia for the final solution of the Egyptian question. Russia demands the settlement of the question at once, ‘and ‘does not wish to wait until England, flashed with success, is demanding her own terms by right of victory. Austria agrees with Russia, and both countries are moving‘in concert on the question and wish Europe to decide the sae.

Terrible riots have taken place in Madras between the Hindoos and the Mvham- medans. Shocking atrocities have been

perpetrated by the ‘latter. The authorities are exercised over the danger of the riots, and fear that they will spread.

Whalers arriving at Pentland Firth re- port the fishery 48 very successful.

Murder in Montreal Death of Solicitor General of New Brunswick.

Special Despatch to the Examiner, MontxeaL, Aug. 29. Maria Spearman shot dead a young farmer named McHafirey, at Gouldbourne, near the City of Montreal. Jealousy was the cause of the murder. McHaffrey had been paying his addresses to Maria Spear- man, and thev were often seen in company. It suddenly transpired that McHaffrey

was about to marry another girl. Maria Spearman was driven to desperation and waiting for her false lover— shothim. The murderess has been arrested.

The Honorable John Herbert Crawford, Solicitor General of New Brunswick, is dead. He was comparatively young, being only thirty-nine years of age.
