Mr. Rogers asked the Commissioner of Public Works whether he had, before tak- iug off the balances for his annusl report, caused the entries in the counterfvil re- ceipt books, cash book and township. led- gers to be couwpared, and if check-marks were placed on the items in the township ledgers to denote that this checking had been done. When the question was asked, Mr, . McMillan was not prepared to an- swer. Surely he could say ‘'yes” or “tno.” Some days afterwards he submitted a statement in writing setting forth that the officials of the Dapartment had made the comparwon referzsed to and had placed on (he items the necessary check marks.
Now, passing over the strange fact chat this checking appears to be made by the yificiala who made the original entries, we state on the authority of several members of the House of Assembly, who went into the Land Office and examined the township ledgera, that no check-marks denoting this comperigon or any sudit whatever are tu be found in connection with entries of cash received since the present Government mto power. Mr. Rogers asked chat some of the township ledgers be produced in the House of Assembly, but the Govern- ment refused to produce them.
Mr. Balderston in his certificate says that he examined ‘‘township ledgers,” (not all of them) and finds ** distinct check- marks showing the page of cash book from which such entry was made.” This shows plainly that the writer either purpoaly or through ignorance confounds the references in the township ledgers to the original entry with checkmarks which should de- note a subsequent audit.
We are authorized to say that Mr. Me- Leod's statement in the House of Assembly that there are no check marks in the township ledgers to denote an audit is strictly correct. Let the township ledgers for Lots 65 and 34, asked for by Mr. Rogers be produced, and then it will be seen that Mr. McMillan gave an erroneous statement to the House.
The matter of audit is of great import- ance just now, because a large shortage appears to have occurred during the last year in the land office. Mr. Shaw called the attention of the House to this shortage on Monday last. But noexplanation was given by the Leader of the Government or the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Here are Mr. Shaw’s figures :—

Hon. Mr. Gordon resumed the debate on the resolution in amendment of the motion to go into Committee of Napply. He ra- ferred to the fact that $6,325 were loat last year on the sale of debentures, which, with the interest paid, amounts to $12,000—quite asaag sum. No etatesmain would, he maintained, disposed of debentures under the existing cireun- atancea of the Province. The interest paid by the Pravince for » number of years past did not aversg@ more than $3,200 per year ; hut Jast year we lost by our financial operations bet ween #12 000 and $13,000. Mr. Gordon criticised the erroneous financial ststemenuts sub- mitted to the Legislature Iast year and strongly cenaured the Government for the renewal of the mortgage vote and the in- iquitous disfranchising and gerry:nandering sections of the Act respecting the Legisla- ture. He said that every man should have the right to vote freely, and declared that he was surprised? to see running throngh ihe speech of the hon. member for Be- deque (Mr. Bell) a spirit of revenge. He retorted severely in respect to charges pre- ferred by the hon. gentlemen, who, he

He also referred to Mr. MeMillan’s pledge that he would not vote for a measure to change the boundaries of electoral districts and said that the men of yesterday are not the men of to-day. ‘The strictures of the hon. member for New Londow (Mr. Warburtop!, he said were excusable ou the supposition that he was not responsible at the time he spoke. He was followed by Messrs. Roberteop, McKay, Cummiskey and Warburtow, the last of whom had the floor when the House adjourned. EVENING SESSION, House met at 8.30
~My, Warburton resumed the debate on the amendment meved by the Leader of the Opposition. He denied the truth of the state- ment made by the senior member for George- town, that while he (tr. W.) was speaking in the House a few nights sgo he was not responsible for what he said. He said he was fully reaponsible and would not take back one single word. Hie then proceeded to reiterate the charges made on the occasion in

The item for interest passed, and the chair- man reported the thirty-dve resolutiors agreed to. The report was adopted and a committee was appointed to draw up a bill in accordance therewith.
Mr. Warburton, from said committee, submitted a bill entitled ‘‘ An Act to ap- propriate certain moneys therein mentioned for the year 1892.” The tenth rule of the House was suspended and the bill was read a first time, read a second time in committee and reported agreed to, and read a third time and passed.

Mr. Bell submitted a biil amendiag the act respecting the procedure of the Supreme Court in the matter of relief from adverse claims against sheriff's awl others, which was rex a first time, a second time and come mitted, and a third time and passed, the tenth rule of thesHouse being suspended for that purpose.
Mr. Clow asked the Commissioner of Public Works if ic is the intention of the Govern- ment to psy certain road orders drawn by Supervisor Charles Martin of Road District No. 11, Queen's County, for work done in said district, said order having being presented at the Public Works Office and refused payment, and if it is not the intention to pay said orders to give the reason for not paying them.
Hon, Mr. McLean said the payment of the orders referred to had been withheld because it had not been shown that the work wassatie factorily performed.
Mr. Clow also asked.the Commissioner of Public Works if it ia the intention of the Government to repair the road leading from Lower Moatague Ferry Wharf along the shore by Westaways to St. Andrews Point during the incoming summer, as petitioned for some time ago,
Hon. Mr, McLean said the matter referred to was under the consideration ot the Govern- ment. The carrying out of the prayer of the petition would entail the expenditure of a large sum for land damages.

Mr. Warburton submitted the usual address to His Honor the Lieutenant Governor, thank- ing him for the varions communications and messages sent to the House during the session and for the readiness with which he complied with the wishes of the House in the matter of arantiog supplies

The SS. Worcester has been purchased by the North Atlantic Steamship Co. for temporary service between Loston, Halifax and P, E. Island. The direwtors of the Cumpany seeing the necessity of imme- diately taking up the business between these ports, and realizing the importance of affording accommodation to shippers and the travelling public with as litile deiay as possible, have determined to fit up and despatch the Worcester, and the ship will be ready to sail in about two weeks. It is the intention, and the President, Mr. Alfred Winsor, has in view the fact that it will be necessary, to build sh!ps suitable for this trade, but as the present needs de- mand attention, it was considered in the interest of all better to start at an early date and proceed with the business. An- other vessel will be procured immediately to sail alternately with the Worcester. The Company have several in view, any of which can be fitted for temporary’ serviee,
