Orzawa, Dec. 28.

This morning His Worship the Mayor received a eheck for $400 from the Gover- nor General, as a donation from himself and Princess Louise to the poor of Ottawa.

This afternoon some 800 loaves of bread, about 1,500 poueds of meat and a quantity of tea and molasses were distributed to the poor at the corner of King and Church streets by a number of citizens.

The reporter's room im the main depart- ynenta! building is being thoroughly re- fitted.

At the Canada Central depot last even- ing aman named Graham tried to step from the train while still in motion, but slipped and fell, the train passing over one of his feet, while he was also severely bruised about the head and body.

MontTREAL, Dec, 24.

The local mouey market is dull, but firm, call loans being quoted at 7 percent. Flour still nominal, and no business expected until after the holidays.

The fact that Hon. Mr. Masson, a French Canadian, fills the position of Minister of Militia and Defence, has given impetus to the yolanteer movement in the French-speaking population, A new French-speaking regiment 13 laine formed, with Laprairie as its head- quarters; and itis the intention to make a crack corps of it; one, in fact, that will rival any of our city corps, and that shows on tle

rt of its promoters no mean ambition. It will be made up of six companies, two of which will be formed in Laprairie, and the remaining from amongst inhabitants in country districts. Que company has already been formed, and its captain, who was in town the other day, repre- sented that it was the intention to have all appointments of the latest = A number of the proposed officers are wealthy, andamong them will be both M. P.’s and M. P. P.’s. The regiment will wear a scarlet uniform.

Aman named Burton, said to be formerly of Halifax, and lately a resident of Boston, was arrested here to-day for the embezzle- ment of $6,000 from a Boston firm by whom he was employed.

It is thought that owing to the visit of the Thirteenth New York Regiment to Montreal His Excellency the Governor General will visit this city in preference to Toronto. The matter was mentioned last night to Hon. Mr. Masson and it is thought he will bring the matter to His Excellency’s attention.

There is very little extra destitution among the poor, as compared with this time last year, as far as reported.

Toronto, Dec. 24.

Efforts are being made to have Toronto streets lighted by electric light.

The official returns give Hon, Mr. Morris a majority of 43 in Toronto East.

Charitable Societies to-day distributed Christmas cheer in Toronto and Montreal.

The judgment of the Court of Appeal in the Lincoln local election case, on reserved points, adds 22 votes to the respondent's previous majority, making it three more than that declared by the returning officer, three years ago. The votes had all been struck off by the registar, against whose rulings appeal was taken. This virtually decides the case in Mr. Rykert’s favor ; but as he resigned his claim two years ago to the seat, all it does now is to keep Mr. Nelson out. The costs of the case are $17,- 000.

McLane, who was shot at the election row at St. Agatha, Manitoba, on the 12th inst., died yesterday.

The schooner ‘‘Swan,” of Canso, with mack- erel and codfish for Halifax, struck this after- noon near White Point, and will be a total wreck.

Lonvon, Dec. 24.

The ‘‘Times’” financial article says 4 quiet feeling continues, and people begin ta hope that in a few more days the worst will be over. The market will, no doubt, be much helped by the large influx of gold into the Bank yesterday. The amount was not known up to the close of business, and it is rumored to be larger than if was. More will probably be sent in to-day, and should hoards, known to be in the prov- inces, begin to come back, reserve is likely soon to recover its strength. This 1s very satisfactory, but it will not materially affect the price of money for the next few days.

Severe weather continues throughout the United Kingdom and the distress increases. The Mayor of Sheffield announced yester- day that 10,000 people required relief in

this city. Larne, Ireland, Dec. 24.

_ The steamship State of Louisiana, from Glasgow for New York, ran ashore this morning at Hunter’s Rock while entering Larne Lough. The vessel will probably become a total wreck.

James Duff, a Conservative M. P. is dead. He served as captain of the 23rd Fusilliers; was taken prisoner at Inkermann In the Crimean war, and for service in that war 1e2eived English and Turkish decorations.

JELLALABAD, Dec. 20. Major Cavagnari to-day received an import- ant communication from the Ameer, the con- | tents of which are not yet made known. A Lahore dispatch reports that Yakoob

| Khan has been proclaimed Ameer by the

chiefs of one of the great Afghan sections. Opinion is decided as to his course, but the de- fection of the Ameer’s troops, who, at Jellala- bad, even joined the British troops, will com. pel him to accept terms if coupled with a guarantee against his father and the Russians. Chis might obviate even the temporary occu- pation of Cabul by the British troops.

A Quettah dispatch says the Government of Candahar has informed the Ameer that oppo- sition to the British is futile.

Russian advices state that the Ameer has gone to Belkah to raise a Turcoman army.

A Jellalabad dispatch says the Ameer has gone to Turkestan.
