Lorne Adams was play- ing about the door yard at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Adams. Burlington, when to his amazement. he noticed a per- fectly formed daisy with freshly opened petals. -Mrs. Bruce Johnston presided at the January meeting of the Laura Blain Missionary Society of the summerside Baptist Church on Monday evening at the home of Mrs. C. B. Jelly. The opening hymn "Saviour Thy Dying Love" with Mrs. Clifford Smith at the piano was followed by the Scripture. read- ing in Psalm 62 by Mrs. Frank Jenkins and plrnycr by Mrs. Clar- ence Mercer. The president read an article on "The Power of Prayer" and the singing of "My Faith looks up to Thee" ncluded the worship period. For the Study Period Mrs. J. H. lcuty read a paper on t'Korea Today" and Mrs. Elmer Newson read an article on the superstitions of the sick in India. During the business session fifteen membatrs answered roll call with a scripture verse con- taining the word "Prayer." Mrs. Jelly read a letterj on the Bible School in Moncton to which a box of canned goods will be packed and shipped this week. Promoters Of New Co-op Store Hold Meeting

In the C. M. B. A. Hall, Stum- marside. last evening a public meeting was held of the promoter; of the new co-operative store for the Wnpose of explaininz to the l9llgl'li. public all the problems amine in connection with the opening of such a store and to answer any. questions in the minds of prospective investors.

The organization meeting was held some time ago and an option taken on the Hardware Depart- ment of Smallman's Ltd. as a site for the proposed store. The sum of 515.000 would have to be rais- ed in order to take up this option and it was learned last night that about one half of this amount has been so far realized. The balance must necessarily .be raised by January 15th at which date the option expires.

Mr. Bren-ton Clark. president of the organization in Summerside presided at last night's meeting and introduced Mr. J. G. Dennis. of the co-operative movement and Mr. Jerome OlBrien of the co- operative store, Charlotte-town. The speakers outlined the general sit- uation up to the present and the meeting laid plans to canvass the Town for the necessary share and loan capital to complete the deal.

Tribute To dune Crier

During the morning session the Attsrney General paid high tribute to the thirty-seven years of service of the Court crler. Mr. Bernard Mr- Cabe, and commented on his court- eous and efficient manner.

Justice MacGuiga.n added the ap- preciation of the Court to the words of the Attomey General. and said he hoped Providence would spare Mr. Mccabe for many more V95” to continue his duties of opening and closing the Court.

Temperance Act Appeal

The first case to be heard yes- terday afternoon was an appeal by Donald Gregory. 05 Prince Street. from a conviction under the Tem- perance Act. J. P. Nicholson repre- sented the Crown and J. A. Mac- Donald K.C. the defence.

Chief cf Police MacArthur. the first witness called. stated that at 4 p.m. on October 30 Corporal war- ren of the R. C. M.P. and Corporal Lund of the City Police had brought into his office 12 bottles of liquid, labelled Bay Rum. which they left in his custody. one of these bottles had been later taken by Corpcral Lund. on his instructions. to the Trovlncial analyst at the Sumter- i.um. On November 2 it was retum- ed wltll a certificate stating that its alcoholic content was 51.6 per- cent.

In answer to questions. Corporal W.l-I. warren stated that he had visited the home of the appellant en the day in question. and that it was a boarding house operated by the appellant. his wife and his

Donald Gregory was then called and staicd that he is a cook. and is married and has two cliildren. He said that he has been gunempioyeu since the time of the search of his home. and has been under the care of a doctor at the sanatorium for some time.

Gregory said that the coat in question had been ham- ing in the hell since his visit in May. 1060. and that he had not truched it since. Cross examined by Mr. Nicholson. the appellant. said that he had never seen the bottles before they were taken from his coat by Corp- oral-Warren. and that there had been I third man. apparently an officer. present during the search.

a minimum of two years in the armed forces.

3. Price-wage controls will involve "real sacrifices of

Once again. as he did in a maj- or policy speech to the Senate last Friday. Taft discounted the threat of another great war soon.

Obviously alluding to Truman's statement onday that Russia is bent on a step-by-step conquest of the world, the chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Com- mittee said he does not believe the Russians are ready to launch any such allout aggression.

"Military conquest of the world must look a great deal more dif- ficuit to the Russians than it does to some panic-stricken people in this country." he said.

Taft said there is "no great dif- ference of principles" between himself and Dewey. But he said Dewey's suggestion that the arm- ed forces he built Ulp immediately to perhaps 11000.0(!) men might greatly disturb war production.

Other Developments Taft's speech came amid these other developments:

1. Treasury Secretary John Sny- der and congressional tax man- agers reached tentative agreement to begin consideration of a big new tax bill Feb. 1.

Congressmen mentioned a boost of as much as 810.000.000.000 a year. It would be the third big tax increase since the outbreak cf the Korean war last June 25.

2. Construction of a 60.000-ion aircraft carrier. at an estimated cost of 52.15.000.000. was unanim-

ously approved by the House. of Representatives armed services committee.

The giant carrier is an import- ant item on theinavy's new 32.- ooomoooo shipbuilding program.

In his speech at the National Press Cililb, Taft said his program had been gritlcized on the ground that it would mean "running out" on Europe. .

He said that is not so. There is neither defeatitm nor isolatloniem in his program. Taft said.

In Uh! appeal of Cecil Maynard Foy against a conviction of reck- less driving, the appeal was allow- ed without costs. The appellant was represented by R.R.. Bell K. C. The Attorney General stated that Foy had paid a heavy penalty ingPrince County for the same offence he was now charged with in Q1199” County.

The appeal by Roy Louis Oakes from a conviction for drunken driving was abandoned on recom- mendation of his oonmsei. Mr. 0-K- Foster. and the appeal was dismiss- ed with costs of ten dollars.

An appeal by George A. Bunting from It conviction for drunken driv- ing was abandoned on recommend- ation of his counsel, L.P. O'Don- nell.. and this appeal was also dis- missed with costs of ten dollars.

A civil non-jury case introduced was that of Robert Dalzlel. plaint- uf, fgpfenenud hy J. P. Nicholson. for damages against Stewart Mot- ors Ltd.. and Willard Forest Mac- Donald. uspiesented by 0.1!. Post- er and Mr. MacDonald. Upon rc- quest of counsels, this case was left at the foot of the docket.
