For Haurrax,—The steamer Princess Beatrice sailed for Halifax at 4 o'clock, yesterday afternoon, with a cargo of lob- sters, pork, potatoes, etc., and the follow- ing passengers : W Grammas, Mr Morgan, Rev John Rose, Mrs D McMillan, Mrs M McGrath, Mrs Frail and Mr. James M. Sutherland.

DESTROYED RY FirneE.—We regret to learn that the barn of Mr. Lemuel Dalton, Rose- ville, Lot 4, was destroyed] by fire on Wed- nesday last. The fire is supposed to have originated from bush fires. The loss is the greater on account of the barn being new, having been completed only a few months ago. Mr. Dalton has the sympathy of the community in his loss.

Souris Tea.—The big Tea at Souris yesters day was one of the greatest successes of the season. The attendance was large, and the weather, with the exception of a slight shower in the afternoon, was all that could be de- sired. The tea and refreshment tables were well stocked. The special train from the city returned shortly after eleven last night, and the excursionists report having an exceed- ingly pleasant time.

Don’t Forcet Ir.—The musical excursion by moonlight in the steamer Princess of Wales this evening will be well worth attending. There will be lots of dance music for those who delight in ‘tripping the light fantastic toe,” and for those who do not dance as wel! as for those who do, Mr. Galbraith has pre- pared a very choice programme. Refresh. ments will be provided on board. The steamer will leave the wharf at 8.15.

He Wasn't Feeting Weiit.—Arthur Up- ham, of New London, Ct., and Bob Fitzsim- mons, the New Zealander, fought four rounds at New Orleans, La., last Monday night be- fore the Audabon Athletic Assoclation for a $1200 purse. The big, awkward, loose-jointed, long-armed Australian was not feeling well, but, after his right and left had played upon Upham’s neck, jaw and stomach a little, Up- ham was at his mercy. The fight could have been finished in the second round, but Fitz- simmons took matters easy.

For Bostron.—The steamer Worcester sailed for Boston last afternoon, with a general cargo and the following passengers: Charlotte Ann Byers, Sarah Byers, James Byers, Nellie Byers, Rosie Byers, Henry Byers, Mrs McKinnon, James Murray, Geo Murray, Lily Ryan, Charlotte Ryan, Geo Minchie, Annie Nicholson, Christina Nicholson, Eliza Strang, Chas Kingman, Elias Jenkins, Edward McLean. Daniel McLean, Winnie Dooley and Nellie Hurst.

Don’r Detay.—As the Japanese Village only remains here a few days longer, it would be well for those who have not yet called at the Rink todo so at once. Be- sides seeing the Japs at work, witnessing the Shaffers in their specialties and laugh- ing at the Punch and Judy show, all wiil have an§opportunity of guessing for the gold watch. The guessing will close on Saturday evening, when the prize will be awarded. Go to-night andtry your luck.

Great Suffering at Sea

Quesec, July 31.

The bark Askoy, Capt. Holverson, from Hamburg, which arrived here, has on board Capt. Anderson, the mate and four of the crew of the Norvegian bark Speranza. On the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, the Speranza ran into an ice berg. The crew took to the boats, the captain and_ first mate, with four of the crew, taking the largest boat. The second mate took com- mand of the smaller boat, with three of the crew. The smaller boat has not been seen since the day after the collision, three weeks ago, and they are all thought to be lost. The captain’s boat had very little provisions in it. On the sixth day starva- tion stared them in the face. On the eighth day the last drop of waterggave cut. Onthe afternoon of the ninth day the Askoy hove n sight and picked up the unfortunate men. A boy in the captain’s boat had his feet badly frozen, and the seaman were all more or less exhausted by the privation and the intense cold.

DIPHTHERIA *PIDEMIC.

The Fatal Disease Spreading Rapidly,

Toronto, July 31.

A despatch to the Empire from Bonne Bay, Nfld., describes a violent outbreak of diphtheria at Red Bay, a fishing settlement on the Labrador coast. The disease was spreading rapidly. There is no doctor along the entire coast. The poor ignorant people have no disinfectants or medicine, and are ignorant of the use of them. Over twenty deaths are already reported.

Aid Wanted. LINCOLN, Neb., July 31.

The following address has been issued by the oflicers of the Irish National League of America : - the publication of Mr. Parnell’s letter relative to the Convention, advices have been received from the Irish leaders deputing the urgent necessity for the immediate trans- mission of all available funds in America to the Home organization. In view of this severe crisis and in order that no true friend of Ire- land can be excusable for neglect in 1 enderin such assistance as his means will afford, al branches of the league, afliliated organiza- tions and individuals sympathizing are hereby authorized to forward their funds direct to the office of the League in Dublin. The ad- dress of the treasurer of the League in Ireland is Dr. Joseph E. Kenny, M. P., 43 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin.”

The address is signed by President John Fitzgerald, Treasurer Charles O’Rielly and Secretary John H. Sutten.

The school will pro- vide a first-class education.
