It is learned that the Association will meet with the City Council tomorrow with a. view to arriving at a solution of the problem which would enable Moncton to remain in Senior Group A competition. The Association have announced that they cannot carry on under the present terms of the lease.

Dick Turpin Wins Classic

CHESTER, Eng, May 3.—(C. P. Cabin-R. F. Watson's Dick Tur- pin today won the Chester Cup stakes of the two-and-a-quarter- mile route at this track. Lord Derby's Guiscard was second and M. H. Benson's Mandritsara third.

In order to be fit for breeding a hen must not only be a good layer but she sh0u‘d be able to transmit her qualities to her progeny. The Progeny Test is the only means to find out if a male or hen are good breeders, that is able to pass thei- qualities on to their progeny.

With regard to the daughters, the egg production is recorded through trap nesting, the only way to obtain data of incontestable value. The sons are tested by pedi- Eree breeding. The results may be progressive or regressive. They are progressive when the qualities of the progeny exceed those of their parents. They are regressive when the qualities of the progeny do not come up to those of therparents. When no selection is practised in a flock the tendency is retrograde: therefore, the selection of breeding stock is absolutely necessary in or- der to maintain a certain degree of excellence in the flock.

At the Dominion Experimental Station at La Ferme, Quebec, test- ed hens that are shown by the Progeny Test as being able to transmit their qualities toltheir progeny are used for breeding. Only those hens which laid 200 eggs and over during their pullet year, are mated. Even if she is a heavy layer, no hen is used I01‘ breeding unless she is in good phy- sical condition and her qualifica- tions are as required by the Stan- dard of her breed. Moreover, she must lay uniform eggs, with sound shells and weighing on the average 24 to 28 ounces per dozen.

The hens are placed in mating pens about February 15th, l2 hens with one male.

Sales Tax- MaintainedAt Present Level

OfITAWA, May Ii-The House of Commons take-another bite at the Rhodes Budget today, passing the Sales Tax provisions after a com- paratively mild discussion. The Budget maintained the Bales Tax at the six per cent level and re- moved from the exemption list a score or more commodities.

Most of the criticism today" was directed against the Finance Min- istcr for removing from the ex- emption list a. long line cf food- stuffs. including flour, molasses, oatmeal, sago and tapioca. Liberals also complained of the new prov- ision which taxes pies, cakes and other delicatessen products.

It was all a question of the Do- minion forced to raise revenue, re- plied Finance Minister Rhodes. There were obvious reasons why certain foods should not be taxed but always in the immediate back- ground was the hardpressed treas- ury which must be replenished. The six percent tax would yield $13,000.- 000 alone on the goods removed from the exemption list. '

"Modern author- ities are unanimous that the trend is for the masses to desire a more equitable distribution of wealth. These authorities point out that either this must be done by Gov- emments through the levying of taxation for the provision of more extensive social services, or the people will take things in their own hands as they have done in so many places throughout the world, notably South American, Russia and other European countries.

The average amateur gardener finds it rather s. puzzling and dif- ficult task, ln planning his garden on paper, to figure out practical combinations of vegetables, which it is necessary to do to obtain full use of the producing capabilities‘ of the soil. As an aid inplannlng a number of combinations which have been tried out successfully are set down:

Cauliflower, lettuce, radishes- Early cauliflower in rows 3 feet apart. Between the rows plant a row of lettuce. Between the lettuce and the cauliflower sow a row of radishes. This would give you the foliowing distances: Cauliflower 9 inches: radishes, 9 inches; lettuce 9 inches; radlshes 9 inches, then the second row of cauliflower.

Cucumbers, peas, radlshes-- Dwarf peas in double or single rows 6 to 9 inches apart between rows of peas and later hills of cu- cumbers in rows midway between the rows of peas.

Carrots, parsnips, spinach, lettuce or radish-es-Plant carrots or pars- nips in rows 2 feet apart. or 1n ai- ternating rows 2 feet apart. Mid- way between the first two rows plant radishes, lettuce in the se- cond two rows and spinach in the third two rows.‘

The thieves had stolen a case of beer from a. refrigerator in a house on Water Street, but had been detected by the occupants of the house who phoned the police. The officers were in pursuit of the offenders when the ‘latter encoun- tered Mr. Walker, who opened fire on them.

EVAPORATED MILK EXPORT RECORDS LARGE GAIN

Canadian evaporated milk found its way into thirty countries in March and the export advanced to 2,284,300 pounds vlaued at $152,848 from 810,200 at, $62,247 in March, 1932. British Empire countries took most of the product, the United Kingdoms share being 1,660,000 or more than half. The export of con- densed milk and milk powder also increased.

Commercial failures numbered 214 in February as compared with 216 in January and 221 in Febru- ary, 1932. Trading establishments accounted for 117 of the February assignments. Prospects G o o d For Banner Racing Season

‘more is every indication that this year will be a banner year in horse racing. Not ‘for years has there been so much interest. taken in this sport.

Mack stcele, the well known

trainer, has a string of horses in training at the Smnmerside Trot- ting Park, among whom are Lucky Lindy (21115), the war horse who is in the pink of condition; and Mr. Squires (2.16) judged by Mack as a real trotter. Those two horses are owned by Wellington McNeill of ‘Charlottetown. Anosner favorite, Because (2.12) is being cared for by Mazf; and has fully recovered from his accident of two years ago and is in splendid form. Mr. J. P. Smith, Kinkora, is the lucky owner.

Mack also has the famous Helen D., which was purchased by him and arrived from Boston a few days ago. This mare 1s by Atlantic Express, and is four years old. Shc won the Senior Yankee Stake, worth $947.04 at South Weymouth, Mass, for three year olds last September in 2.19, 2.22 and was second in the three year old trot at Marshfield, Mass, 2.14111. t This filly has raced seven times against aged horses and has never been out of the money.

Another good two year old filly, sired by La Copia, dam Miss Bell Rico, is in Mack's string and is own- ed by Mr. A. J. A. Barter, of St. John, N. B. This horse shows great promise. A Mr. Arthur Allen, of Summerside has a 200d three year old colt un- der Maclrs care and will race him this summer. This colt was sired by Clay Waits, his dam is a. sister to Marjorie M.

Mack expects to add two more to his stables within a week. '

Mllligan and Morrison's race course at-Northam is being prepar- ed for the racing season and Mr. Edgar Milligan, the proprietor, is get/ting things in shape. Com for ensilage is still of con- siderable importance on a Bfefll many farms in Eastern Canada. .

During the season of 1932, the Divlslo not Forage Plants, Central Experimental Fawn, Ottawa, con- ducted g. test in which careful comparison was made of a num- ber of corn varieties commonly grown for ensilage 1n Eastern Can- ada, in addition to several. that are not so commonly grown or so well known. ’

Judged from the standpoint of yield, the varieties ranked in the following order:

Dents-Wisconsin No. 7. Golden Glow, teaming and Bailey.

Hints-Compton, Early, Long- fellow, and Sa1zer's North Dakota.

All varieties were cut at the same stage of maturity, the "late dough" stage. and were presumably equal in quality. Wisconsin No. 7 yielded better than any other variety. Compton's Early yielded equally as well as Golden Glow, Learning and Bailey and since the flints were harvested one week earlier than the dents this variety should be given the perferenoc in districts where the season is somewhat short for using the dent varieties. The main difference between dent and flint varieties for ensilage purposes (apparent fro yield) is in the production of suckers; the flints sucker very freely while the dent sucker very little, if at all. Corn for grain is not of very great importance in Eastern Can- ada, except in southwestern On- tario, where the standard varieties
