It was therelore agreed that we should return ,' ‘ on Saturday to Pictou, two remain in Charlottetown, and 1 ‘ two go to New London, about 30 miles on the opposite Side ofthc Island front Gcorgctown, returning on Sunday, and proceeding with the remaining two to Georgetown on Mon- day. The land is agreeably interspersed with hill and dale, the soil oy' which is unsurpris- udinfirtih'ty on this continent. The Is and is about 150 miles long, and about 35 miles broad on an average, the rivers It'll. arms of the sea are numerous, affording an abun- dant supply of water power for saw and flour mills, and there is not any spot of land which is more than seven '11le from the this mark. The climate is mild and salubri- Duo, and free from those fogs which almost constantly brood over the Nova Scotia coast. On our road we came u l to numerous good form houses, and not a few shantics, al of which had a peculiarity which strikingly contrasted with those I had been accustOmcd to see in Canada. The very poorest ofthcse sbanties had a porch iit front of the house door, built ofsubstantial logs, which must prove very ser- viceable during the winter. The crops were about three weeks later than on the Island of Montreal, but they appear- at heavier. The difference betiveen the heat in the sun Id in the shade has been established by thermometer to he ohly about six degrees. The summer is cooler than in (hands, and the winter is warmer, while during the former ‘ is always a healthy sea breeze. Disease is almost unknown, and the island is not, therefore, a good profes- ’ clonal residence for the leeclt tribe. The roads are truly beautiful, and would ravish the right even of the great M‘fldum.

It it pears that the local legislature of the colony have a mains for making good roads, which is one of the most commendable they could be infected with, and one with which it would be a good thing ifthey Would infect the col- lective wisdom ofCanada. Although a drizzling shower fell during the afternoon, and it rained pretty heavily all next div, the country was so enchanting that! did not re- \ 3er a ducking, the more especially as at the various stages \ _ 'or rather farm houses where we took a temporary rest, we

saw something of the manner and. mode of living of the in-

habitants, who are very hospitable. The Island contains

‘ gas, is. 14d. per brace. I bought a good sized lobster fi'om an Acadian, for 2d. sterling, and both lobsters and oys- ters are so plenty that it is only strangers who ever think of eating them. Before leaving Charlottetown for Georgetown on Monda morning, we got our bill for the conveyance to New Lon on from the livery table keeper, who had the impudence to charge u no less thad‘£3 10s., of the Island currency, which would make £2 183. 4d. of' our currency. 0 ' “ We gave him $10, Ilalifiix currency, which was no much, considering that the driver he sent with us was a m am} in ferric—an impudcnt Irishman, but an absence of twenty, years from his native soil may account for the one.

On Monday, three of us left Charlottetown in the stage 4b:- Georgetowu, leaving another of our little patty to spend V his remaining time in shooting and fishing, until the arrival ofthc Unicorn at Pictou, from which he intended to return

The scener on the road was even more pleas:- Ing than that to New London, as it was under a much higher degree ofcultivation, and pnrtook very much ofthc appearance pf the county of Kent, with the exception of fences for hedgerows and the absence of the moss-covered gothic churches which there so agreeably relieve the eye , of the traveller. The Vales, crowned with the glories of an abundant harvest, the neat farm houses, the substantial the rosy checked lads and basses, the joyous gambols ofthc chubby checked children, and their Scottish dialect, almost transported me in reality, as they did in feeling, to the sunny carses of Gowrie and Falkirk. As on the other side of Charlottetown, the road was as smooth as a bowlin and on one of the passengers remarking that the in- itanss had beautiful sletgbing during the winter,I asked if there were any cahots on the roads, but he could not it nd what I meant even when I attempted to ex- plain Wllnt they are and how they are formed. I need not say that l envied him his blessed ignorance. This Island would a perfect paradise, Were it not for the rapacity 'wlthyvhtch a few greedy officials prey like cormorants on the Vitals of: the settlers, and grind them to the earth with most. vexatlous emotions, and oppression only to be paralleled by Russian, nobles towards their serfs.
