THE. PATRIOT FORGETS.

Tue Patriot expatiates. upon the fact that prosperity continues in Canada even though we havea Liberal Government. It seems to forget that the Liberal Gov- ernment, false to therr programme, have roaintained the Conservative policy. The Liberals declared that they would, when elected, root cu: protection. It was upon this ground that “thetory journals” pro- phesied that “a change of Government would bring ruin tothe country.” But:be Liberals in office have maintained ihe pro- tection which they denounced when in oppositiou—they are carrying out the tory policy—and the country continues to prosper. The Liberal Goverument bad the wit to see that the Tory journals were right, and that they must at all hazards— even to the point of falsifying their record aud forfeiting their characters— hold to the course pursued by their pre- decessors, or the country would be ruined, If they are entitled toany credit for the continued prosperity of the country, it is for this,—ouly for this. They had nothing to do with increasing ihe price ef ewheat. They had nothiog to do with the diecoveries of god in British Columbia and the Klondike, which have tollowed the opening up of tue Western country by their predecessors. Io retpect to our cheese and buter industry they are but following the lead of those who went before them,—the few changes they have made

They bave talked a great deal atout cold storage and direct regular communication with Great Britain; but we have yet to see that they bavein thia regard done any- thing in this part of thecountry or any- thing worth while im apy other part o country. They have done nothing that has promoted the prosperity of this ‘Domino. They have simply been fortun- ate in succeeding @ goveroment composed -of statesmen, and in stealing their clothes. Whether or pot their extravagance and mal-adnsinistration will neutralize the benefits accruing from the adoptien of their opponent’s policy rewains to be seen.
