At the morning service yesterday the Rev. F. E. Bishop spoke from Psalm 90, l2, "So teach us to num- ber our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

Division o: time is arbitrary. founded on physical sctivity._Our earthly movements in respect to ihe sun and moon give us the basis of such division, time itself flows continuous, changeless. unpsusing. Reckoning of time has its moral and spiritual advantages, it is well that we should consider the im- portance of inking good care of thLs priceless gift of time. To most coma daily duties and responsibil- ities, tragic indeed is the lot of those who have no such demands. Personal duties, social, civic, na- tional, international all make or aught to make certain demands on time. A wise expenditure of time makes for better achievement and this in turn for greater powers. Not only by hours on the dial but by service rendered shall we reclocn our time. Important it is to take care of time in regard to conduct and character 1o;- carelessness and laxity eat into the fabric of our lives as a cancer. The care of time in leisure brings its challenge too. The tendency oi the day is toward moro leisure, more olmortunity for doing things not as a duty but as a joy. Relaxation, amusement. study, social contacts all have their benefits. Perhaps the truest index to character, and among the prin- cipal determinants of personality is the way we spend our leisure. Vital then is the prayer of the Psalmist "So teach us to number our days."

Another eloquent and. inlet-satin! address was delivered by Mr. Bish- op at the evening service.

HOLY REDEBMEII CHURCH

Largo congregations attended the blames at Holy Redeemer Church yesterday morning. Masses were at the usual Sunds hours. High Mass at 10:30 o'clock was celebrated by Rev. W. E. Enright, USSR. The full choir, under the direction of Mr. Alfred Doucette, rendered Leonard's Mass. Miss Maris Plflllct was organist. Elcquent sermons were preached at all the masses by Rcv. R. McKenna, CSSR.

It is necessary to take stock of our ideas and ad- just religion to new knowledge. What was good for our fathers just doesn't suit this generation. God commanded Gideon to tear down the sitar that his father had built. The first essential for a vital relig- ion is that we discard what has no meaning for our use. This is an age cf concentration and specialization. Religion has been overlaid with ac-. tivities. "The Kingdom of God is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. As many as are led by the Spirit of God they aro the Sons of God. If any. man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." This is a time for revision in our personal life as well as social life. Cur sense of need will be bas- ed on our vision of something better. We have only one guiding light- the light ofthc world-shines in the Christ. Let us look to Him and see what we may be in Him.

At the evening service Rev. Hugh Miller gave an eloquent and most suitable sermon for the closing Sunday of another year, ‘from tbs text Matt: 10-22: “He that endureth to tho snd shall be saved." The service of praise was a repetition in part of tho excellent Christmas mu- sic of a week ago, including a. solo by Mrs. Roy Cudmore, which was received with much appreciation. Professor Kendall also gave a short organ recital before the eflening service.

Hon. Mr. Dunning and Hon. Mr. Scott, accompanied by Mr. Peter Sinclair, MP, were among those who worshipped at the morning ser- vice .and were greeted by many friends. Hon. Mr. Scott is an Anglican and in his school days took a partial course in Theology.

The Kings Daughters wish to thank all those who so generously contributed to the baskets distribu- ted at Christmas.

The Young People's Presbytery Union is planning to hold- a school this week from Thursday to Satur- day. Two courses will be given in leadership training. It is hoped that those who are planning to at- tend will register early.

The closing Sunday of the year was impressively observed yesterday when services, momlng and evening were conducted by the Rev. T. Owen Hughes, B.A., cardigan. Mr. Hughq is one oi the ablest preachers in the Maritimos, and lived up to his rep- utation in both sermons yesterday.

course on the words oi Joshua III, and 4: "For ya have not psassd this way heretofore."

1n the evening his sermon was based on 2nd Corinthians. V and l7 “Old things are passed away; all things are become new."

At the morning service the solo in tho anthem was taken by Miss Lena McLure, and in the evening the soloist was Mr. Arthur Bruce.

Eoangelisti J o h n- s t o n Lectures On Time

Under the title of the "Clock oi Heaven" another very interesting lecture was given by Evangelist F. W. Johnston last night- in the Brighton Club Rooms. I-le referred first of all to the various methods employed by man in keeping the time, the dial in the daysof Ahaz, also the methods used by the Jews in the time oi Christ, how they called our nine o'clock the third hour, our twelve the sixth hour, our three the ninth hour, and also how they divided the night into various watches, the first, second, third and fourth watch, etc. But hours, minutes and seconds, the evangel- ist said, wcre too small a matter for the 10rd. God made the sun to rule the day, the moon and the stars to govern the night.

In this connection the evangelist spoke of the literolity of thc days of creation. The very fact that God in Genesis spoke of the sun ruling the day and the moon and stars governing the night is proof con- clusive, said Mr. Johnston, that the days there referred to are the same kind that we are familiar with and that therefore the six days of cre- ation’s week arc literal twenty-four hour days. The fourth command- ment, he said, also establishes the iiterality oi those days when the Lord said that six days shalt thou 1abor;- for in the six days the Lord made heaven and earth." Herc the evangelist said the Lord compared the days upon which he labored with the days upon which we labor, showing conclusively that the days upon which He labored are days such as we are familiar with, and therefore literal days. And these are the days that are marked off by the sun, which of course is the ‘natural clock of the universe and is the one by which we all regulate our watches an

clocks. ~

But while thc sun, moon and stars are the natural clock of the heavens, the divine clock that God made to regulate time, yet when it comes to the week we have a vary different arrangement. There is nothing in nature to regulate the ‘week, and therefore the Lord by a plain divine command gave us a means of determining the end cf overy week since creation. At the close of creations week the Lord gave the Sabbath in which thero was to be a complete oes- sation of labor to interrupt the daily activities of the week. 'I‘i1is recurring interval of, rest would also be a reminder of the work oi creation, and therefore o1 the cre- ator, and since the creator is Christ (Col. 1: l4, 1B) it would therefo be a. reminder of Christ. That Christ is the creator so the evangelist said, is evident from other texts such as the one found in John l: l0, where it says that “He was in the world and the world was made by Him."

Mr. Johnston spoke iengthily on the importance of keeping the Sabbath of creation. He said the Lord blemed the seventh day or Saturday and set it apart for all time as the grand memorial of His creative works. But man have changed it and mutilated it and made other substitutions in its place. Tho Mohamme‘ have

ubstituted Friday, and Rome has substituted Sunday, but tho origin- al Sabbath is just as binding as ever. fie spoke about the observ- ance of the seventh day or Satur- day by Christ and the postles and how that the mm or the apostles spoke to Gentile congregations as well as to Jewish on this ‘neared day, and never once commanded nor did they ever keep any other day. Sunday, he said, was never commanded either by Christ or the apostles, and neither did Christ or the apostlu ever keep Sunday. the first day of the week, but rather Saturday, the seventh day, Mr. Johnston every one to be faithful to the ten precepts of Sinai inamiuch as these some ten commandments were commanded by the lard Jesus Christ.

Salvation Army . Christmas Concert

The Salvation Army in Charlotte- town presented their aunuai Christ- mas program to a capacity house vu Thursday night. Major w. B. Stevens officiating in the dual office of chairman and master of cere- monies, succeeded in his usual ver- satile manner in combining future spiritual notices and co-operative community singing with the audi. encs in the intermission between acts. The performance opened with the young people singing "0 Blessed Bells of Christmastide," and a "Wel- come" recitation, ably rendered by Marion’ Carr. A beautiful duet rendered by Eleanor and Kenneth Austin. bespoke of good Christian endeavour by merit of being com- posed and written by the parents of the Juvenile artists. "The 0mm, mas Spirit", beautifully portrayed by Joan Turner assisted by Grace Diamond, Winnie McLeod, Lois Whitlock, Marjory McEnchern, Mar. jory Carr, and Edna Johnson brought to the audience a realiza- tion of what the Christmas Spirit rsallys means. Marjory Carr, o, juvenile artist of no mean ability, entertained with a recitation entit- .ed "Dolly's Stockings." Hubert Stevens raised a storm- of hilarity with the "Spider" on the wail, which while remarkable for its brevity, amply compensated for the misplacemcnt of‘ his original recita- tion. A playetto entitled "Christmas Greetings” proved to be a great suc- cess and contributed greatly to the goiety of- the evening, the artists, Mrs. G. Austin, Mrs. C. Down, Miss Winnie Down, Mrs. J. Henderson, Mr. Ed. Down and Miss Freda Mc- Cailum performing admirably to the 10y 0f all in the packed hall.‘ The accomplished Misses Down rendered beautifully a, duet “Silent Night", to their own accompaniment on the guitar. Joan ‘Turner, a star of the evening's entertainment, further entertained with a. recitation follow- ed by the very youthful Kenneth Austin, who in spite of making his “premier debut" won the hearts of all by his wonderful elocution,

This was rendered in a natural setting and one readily reverted to the school days in retro. spection, the artists of the juvenile class were May Carr, Mary Mc- Eachern, Audrey Henderson, Grace Diamond, Freda McCailum, Joan Turner, Joan Chandler, Bryant Stevens, Wendell Carr, Lloyd Carr, Robert Stewart and Harry Ben- jsmin.

A playette entitled "The Matri- monial Advertisement" brought forth a great deal of laughter and smiles lighted the visages of many, which may have been otherwise barren. The artists were Mrs. P. Down, Mrs. P. Carr. Miss Minnie Down, Mr. Robert Chandler and Brother Cyrus (Mr. P. Carr). This was followed by a drill in which eight girls took part and displayed a. masterpiece of- co-ordination. Al- though the drill was intricate hnd varied in movement and symphony, the girls swung through it with charming grace and rhythm. The

artists were Grace Diamond, Joan Turner, Joan Chandler, Winnie Mc- Leod, Edna Johnson, Marjory Mc- Eachern, Freda McCsllum, and Audrey Henderson. A song by the school was a tribute to the juvenile vocals. A recitation by Roger Chandler, "Sing a Song of Santa" was received with loud applause. A recitation ably rendered by Minnie McLeod was followed by a visit from Santa Claus '(Mr. P. Down) and candy and oranges were dis- tributed. The varied lighting eflects were under the direction of the chairman, Major W. D. Stevens, who closed the evening's entertain- ment with the Doxology and prayer. Much of the credit for the success of the programme was due to the pat‘ and consistency of Mrs. S. Crockett, who is the young people's sergeant Major. The music was rendered by Mrs. Richards, a very accomplished pianist to whom the entertainment committee are ex- tremely grateful.
