Agricultural Teaching.

We learn that Professor Robertson, the Government Dairy Commissioner for Can- ada, has promised to give a gold medal to the best student in agriculture attending Prince of Wales College, and that Messrs. R. R. Fitzgerald and F. L. each offered a prize of five dollars to the students who—at the approaching ~xami- the highest numler of marks in the subjects of agriculture and agricultural chemistry. This is encour- aging to the agricultural department of the College. We hope that the example thus set by Professor Robertson and the Messrs. Fitzgerald and Haszard will be imitated by

Cheese Factoriesin P. E. Island.

—_—_— Professor Robertson says in the course of

his first annual report :

‘* From Cape Breton I[ Point du Chene to Prince Edward Island, that gem of our Provinces on the Atlantic coast. The beautiful green of its fields and trees, the bright red of its soil, and the deep blue of its many bays, give it a landscape wonderfully pleasant in its insular beauty. The agricultural capabilities of the Island are very great. It has a much smalier percentage of waste land than any of the other Prov- inces, Cheese factories were started in sever- al sections, twelve or fourteen yearsayo. As a consequence of some unexplained misfor- tunes in management, the business has been abandoned almost entirely. During the ceurse of my meetings I took occasion to mention that if young men fromthe Province would apply to me for situations in cheese factories in Ontario, I would be very glad to do what I could, to have them placed in fac tories where they would be instructed in the the very best methods, in order that they might return to their own neighborhoods and re-establish the dairy business upon a firm and secure basis. I have received several applications from young men with that object in view.”

If the Government Dairy Commissioner can succeed in educating our young farmers tu establish cheese factories and make them pay, he will accomplish a good work for P, E. Island.

The Folly of It.

The Buffalo, New York Enquirer, 1 Do- mocratic paper, speaks with no uncertain sound on the trade relations of the United States with Canada. It says :

** This country does a business with Can- ada amounting in round figures to nearly $100,000,000 a year. With a balance of $10,- 000,000 yearly in our favor, such a country is plainly worth doing more business with on these terms. Canada takes our raw mapu- factures and sends us raw material; yet there are those who claim that the best way of inaking money ont of such a neighbor is to re. strict commercial] intercourse with her as much a8 possible. The vessels gave from $1 to $1.40 per barrel, and the fishermen had no trouble or expense, saving to cost their nets into the water and load their boata. As much as ten barrels have been taken

from one cast of an ordinary net. The men who were fitted out have made grand wages, from $i0 to $15 a day being only common Juck. And tke

work goes on yet, for not nearly all the Nova Scotia fleet have been supplied and many of them will make a second trip. American schooners are in the harbor and they are looking with longing eyes at bait their competitors are taking almost free ; while they would have to get out a license st a cost of $1 50 per ton before they could buy. One American captain took a license so L hear, but the rest are going to the Magdalen Islands.

Vessels from as far as Grand Manan, in New Brunswick are in Georgetown after herring, aud the unexampled quantity in the harbor will give them what they want.

Georgetown is bound to be the baiting ground for the bankers after this, as they get good satisfaction at this port. It-should also be the sight for an establishment for smnoking herring and other fish, which can be obtained at nearly all seasons. All that is wanted is the enterprise to start and the herring of Georgetown will become as not- ed as those of Digby, Yarmouth or Grand Manan. G. F. oO,

Hauiarx, May 8.—Lobsters are reported fair to-day at White Head and Port La four, N.S., and good at Lockport. A few herring were taken at Pasbebiac, Que., but there was no fishing of any kind at Grand River. The catch of herring was fair at T:gnish and Kildare and good at Alberton, P. E. 1. Herring also remain plentiful ia Cardigan Bay and Georgetown harbor. No fishing is reported along the coast of Cape Breton to-day, excepting at St. Ann’s, where the herring fishery did well; yet a recent report, which has not been contra- dicted, says that herring are very plentiful in Bras d’Or Lake. A very few herring are reported being taken at the Magdalen Islands. Codfishing is fair at Lockeport, N. 8.; poor at Port LaTour, and a few gas- pereaux are being taken at both places. Bankers report good takes on Brown’s and LaHave Banks. Herriog bait is reported procurable at St. Ann’s, C. B., and ice at St. Ann’s, C. B., and Lockport, N. 8.

—The Empire remarks that the export egg trade with Britain is reaching a stage where the Grit leaders will have to take action or go under. Mr. Warrington, of Belleville, is one of the Canadian dealers who have no fears of the ultimate success of the trade. He has contracted for regu- lar shipments to Liverpool, and four car- loads per weeks of good Canadian hen fruit will go there from this enterprising man. This looks like business.

—Work on Queen Square is progressing rapidly. The fountain is now in working order, and was in fall operation last night and to day. Now isthe time to complete arrangements for promenade concerts dur- ing the pleasant summer evenings. We suggest -hat Mr. Newbery, or a committee of citizens, wait upon the leaders of the different bands for that prrpose. It is al- ready rumored that at least one of the bands has decided not to play because their past efforts were not more generously recognized,
