Navy Admits Defeai; Wrens May Slay. Slim

LEE-ON-SOLENT, England, (AP) --The Royal Navy admitted defeat in a feminine battle of the bulge Monday and gave 200 wreris the right to stay slim.

The girls-memb s of the wom- en's Royal Naval B vice--won per- mission to eat in restaurants near their barracks. For nearly a week they had boycotted the naval mess- room. charging the food was ruin- ing their figures.

Once the permission was grant- ed. most of the girls didn't want it. About 80 trooped off into town io eat salads and such. But the great majority marched" into the mokhouse they once spurned and ale pea soup. steak pie. mashed potatoes and peas followed by tapioca pudding and jam. sauce.

"Nothing fattening about that." said one male officer. And most oi the girls seemed to agree it was a lot better than the grilled saue- iigcs. friend onionsr potatoes and suet pudding of a typical menu last week.

The girls' main complaint had been that the food was cooked for men and by men with no idea what a modern mise needs

Said one plump young wren among the eating-out brigade: "I finally revolted when my boy friend called me shipshspe."

The main points of Mendes- Prance's plan to plug the breech left by French rejection of the European Defence Community plan are:

1. Any pact calling on west Ger- many and France to unite to pro- vide troops for common defence must include Britain as a full partner. The basis for the new alliance would be the 1948 Bnu-

2. Limits would be fixed on fighting forces of West Germany and other members of the alli-

3. Construction of arms factories and arms production would be strictly supervised and controlled.

4. The new alliance would be tied closely to NATO. Mendes- France said this would reduce

BATHURST. NB. (CP)-Fed- eral and provincial governments should join hands in a public works program to provide jobs for unemployed Canadians, the New Brunswick Federation. of Labor said here Monday.

Without argument. 150 delegates to the annual convention of the organization endorsed a resolution urging an immediate start on na- tional and provincial projects. Sub- mitted by the Salnt John and Dis- trict Building and Construction Trades Council. the resolution said thousands out of work are contend- ing with "izrave hardships."

Many of the unemployed. it added. are immigrants encouraged to come to Canada by "false prom- ises and misrepresentation." Their plight was Ottawa's responsibility. as the government had ignored labor's warning that the labor market was being flooded.

Canada is opposed to having Communist China in the UN until it has qualified as a "peace-loving" nation. according to the UN Char- ter. For this country, that means at least a settlement in Korea- free elections and reunification of North and South Korea.

At the same time, Canada wants to have Red China in the UN as soon as possible if for no other reason than that discussion of many Asian problems-Korea and Indochina. for instance-is rather fruitless without the presence of the Chinese Communists.

External Affairs Minister Pear- son. who heads the Canadian dele- gatlon to the UN. has said the fact that the Indochina truce does not come under UN authority is to be regretted.

Partly because Red China is not a UN member. the Indochina. arm- iistlc, to which China is a party 'had to be formulated outside the jurisdiction of the UN at Geneva.

In the Ottawa view. Korea and Indochina are not likely to be major issues at this session of the assembly. The Korean problem was thrashed out at Geneva and no settlement was reached. The yRcds stubbornly refused to sub- iscribe to free elections. Taking up lthe matter again in the UN would appear to be a waste of time.
