By now most of the Universities and Colleges have put their classes of '55 out into the world to find places for themsel- yes in the industrial and professional mar- kets. One does not need the gift of wis- dom or of prophecy to recognize two facts which face these graduating studentsf (1) the world is out of joint; (2) it is certain to remain that way for some time to come. Soon, in one way and another. these young and bright-eyed graduates will begin to demonstrate whether or not their brief en- Counter with the fine arts-and, above all. with discerning teachers-has helped them to make the necessary adjustment with the 0(lf'lilllSlOl'l lhcy cannot escape. But for them, too, there will be compensations, bought without money and without price, if they remain in good heart and courage. and remember that ”the will to do is everything. the reward nothing."

therefore, that some Labour supporters

who are by no means pro-Bevan are sug-

gesting that perhaps the time has come for Mr. Attlee t.o retire from the leadership.

In all likelihood, however, this will blow

over once the normal sense of disappoint-

ment has reached to its proper level. At

72, Mr. Attlee is probably giving some

thought to "going into Yorkshire to raise

pigs", which seems to be the final ambition

of most British elder statesmen; but it is

hardly likely that the Party will want him

to go, or that he himself will want to go,

for some little time yet. And when he

does pam over the reins of leadership, they

will almost certainly go to I level-headed

moderate socialist like himself. If there is

one clear lesson for British organized lab-

our to learn from the recent election. it

is that extreme radicalism does not thrive

well in British soil; and that is something

for which we can all be truly thankful.

They buried D'Anvllle on I barren island but the French dug him up after the war and took his body to Louisbourg where it was long forgotten. some twenty years ago. using the minute plans, of the fort discovered In I Paris vault, Canadian historians dug down in the empty field and un- earthed I skeleton. It was photo- graphed for the newspapers and re-interred.
