Billy Harris Shipped Out

Coach of the defending Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club, George ‘Punch’ Imlach, brought the axe down on the neck of utility forward Billy Harris when he announced Sunday night that the shifty centreman of the Maple Leafs was being shipped out to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League

We fail to see any sound reasoning bebind Mr. Imlach's move because Harris has been a constant bench warmer for the Leafs and we feel the Imiach’s move would appear to put some of the blame for the Leaf’s current slump on the should- ers of Billy Harris who couldn't do much to help the slumping Leafs from his spot on the end of the Toronto bench.

Anytime we have seen Harris in action with the Toronto entry in the National Hockey League and we must admit these have been few and far betwefn, we thought Harris was one of the most effective players on the Queen City’s hockey squad.

Harris is a dedicated hockey man and because he has an

important college exam coming up and because of the playoff bonus money he stands to lose by~going to the minors the studious centreman threw back the reins and threatened to

quit hockey rather than report.:to the Americans.

Imlach and Harris had a meeting and after the coach of the parent club explained that Billy would pick up $1,600 if Rochester makes the playoffs he decided to accept the de motion

We think that Imlach wants to sit back and take a. good long look at his roster and we feel sure that he will be able to see that some of his supposed stars are just dragging their tails behind them as the NHL's 70 game schedule draws to a close and he will hate Jo find a couple of players to fill the shoes of several of“his regulars rather than the guy who is keeping the end of the bench warm

We said early in the season that the New York Rangers stood a good chance of making the playoffs at the expense of the Red Wings and this caused us to suffer from a severe red face condition, but if the schedule had another 15 games to go we think the Leafs would have to reach down and pull up their socks in a hurry or the Red Sullivan coached squad would be in the playoff picture and the defending Stanley Cup champions would -be going home early this season.
