Teams split ‘nd games

The Hockey and Basket- ball Panthers fared out not too badly last weekend as each team split two games. The Lady PantherS' however were not quite as fortunate as they dropped their two home games.

At U.N.B. the hockey Panthers pulled quite an upset on the hometown Devils on Friday night. When you base this on the way the Red Devils played here against the Panthers one would feel certain that the Panthers' chances of winning were quite slim. So on Friday night the \ Panthers had something to prove and disprove at the same time. They had to prove that they could win and they had to disprove what I had said about them in the last edition of the Cadre. On Friday night they did just that as they downed the Red Devils 8-5. According to one observer, "in the third period of that game the Panthers displayed their best hockey of the year". So .take it from there.

On Saturday, the Pants hers were nOt quite so fortunate as they dropped a five-three decision as, gainst the Devils. It would have been beautiful to come home with two big wins but being able to win one is good enough as it will give the Panthers incentive for their eight game stand at home.Hope-_ fully in these games the Panthers can garner enough points to make the top four teams and the playoffs. Mulligan has made one change in the lineup. Glen Clay? bourne has taken over for Guy Desaulnier who decided

to call it quits for the

season. Once again, Billy Suggett had bad luck in

-Fredericton, as he suffered

a concussion. Last year in Fredericton, Suggett lost his front teeth when he was crosschecked, after

the whistle, in a game ag- ainst St. Thomas. The Pant- hers have two games this, weekend: Friday at 7pm ag— ainst Mt. A. and Sunday at 2pm against Moncton.

The Basketball Panthers played much better basket— ball this weekend as they downed St. F.X. on Friday

. night and then on Saturday

night they lost to Dal by only three points. In their

bid to make the playoffs this year, the Panthers have to win most of their remaining games. Their pre- sent record shows them with two wins and six loss— es. They have eight games remaining, three against Mt. Allison, two against

'Acadia, two against U.N.B.

and one against St Mary's. Of these, the Panthers stand a good chance of winning five. The two ag- ainst Acadia and St. Mary's on the other hand are go- ing to be hard to win. If they can win those five games they should make the playoffs.

The first big step in that direction comes up this weekend as they visit Mt. A. on Friday and on Saturday the Hawks repay the visit.

The Lady Panthers aren't having much success of late in the Varsity League. Last weekend they lost two games to St.F.X. and Dal. In those games the Lady Panthers couldn't get untracked in the first half, however, in the sec— ond half they held their own. Perhaps they suffer from jitters in the first half before they get calm- ed down. If they don't get calmed down before the

game starts they may be finding themselves in the loss column more than the win column. It's quite a change for Bart Mulally who last season had an alm— ost perfect season in the Junior Varsity League. So this year it has to be ex- pected that a rookie team in the Varsity will have a rough time. Give them a couple of years and they will be up there with the leaders. However, they will never get to the T03 as is the case in all spor— ts at U.P.E.I. if we don't get a NEW ATHLETIC COMPLEX and perhaps even a Bachelo- rs Program in Physical Education.

REMEMBER THOSE TWO HOME HOCKEY GAMES THIS WEEKEND, FRIDAY AT SEVEN O'CLOCK AND SUNDAY AT TWO O'CLOCK. ALSO HOME BASKET- BALL ON SATURDAY EVENING AT EIGHT O'CLOCK. SO WHY NOT STAY IN THIS WEEKEND, THE PANTHERS NEED US, AND THAT MEANS YOU!!!
