The latter was written to commemoraie the ap- pearance of the lcrmer. As the titles of these encyclicals indicate they are concerned with the bet- ter-men-t of society. Though these encyclicals might be considered old todayruk tend-lng of them will be enough to convince Inyone that they are really still current docmnents with ii vital contemp- orary value.

If we look back over the last sixty years we can easily note a great improvement, at least in eome respects. in the status of the worker and his standard of living. Legislation has done a great deal to remedy some oi the worst ills which were afflicting the worker. Yet the world at the present mo- ment is in a state of social and economic unmet. We hear more today than ever before of the worker's revolution. The worker's problems have not been solved. That is the reason why than doc- uments atlll have a great value for us today. .

It would be preposterous to claim that these cncyclicsls supply easy and detailed answers to all the complex problems of the mo- ment. They do not. In fact, it was not technical problems which the Pope: discussed but the far more important moral principles underlying the entire social order. The basic and fundamental note which these two great Popes em- phasized was that economics and statecraft cannot be divorced from religion and morality.
