Another meeting was held at Red Point, Lot 46, at which a resolution ex- pressive of the fullest confidence in the representatives of the district was unani- mously passed.

‘“ HERNANDO.” PEDIGREE. Enquiries having been made as to the pedigree of the fine colt purchased from General Withers, ef Lexington, Kentucky, noticed in one of our late issues, we have procured the following particulars :—

Other farms, not so well situated and not nearly se weil stocked, have paid their owners handsomely. But every year, heretofore, the Legislature has been called npon to vote a grant fur ite maintenance. It isa matter of surprise that the Farm should so long hare been a drag upon the country. But at last we are told that it is self-sustaining ; and, it is te be hoped that ii will continee in that way. That the delegates have expressed an epivion faver- able to the Island is very gratifying. Their report will be a good advertizement for the island, showing as it does to the farmers of the Mother Country the advantages pos- sessed by it. The settlement here of farm- ers from the Old Country will have a stimulating effect upon our people. The Old-Country farmers have brought agricul- ture to great perfection ; and their farms on this Island would, to seme extent, be schools or patterns for those unacquainted with the high methods ef cultivation which they pursue.

The ninth paragraph of the Speech refers to the purchase of Proprietory estates by the Government. This is very gratifying ; and I think the Government deserve thanks for endeavoring to drive the last vestige of the Proprietary System out «f our country. There are yet, however, one or two small estates, that I ave very much interested m, remaining to be purchased. One of these is the Winsioe Estate. The tenants upen this estate have been been pressing upon the Government to place them on a fevting of equality with their fellow countrymen ; and I hope the Gevernment will not let another session take place before they have released them from Pre- prietory rule. The Winsloe estate is very small: and owing to some provision of the law it could not come under the Act of 1875. Sothat in addition to paying taxes like other farmers, these tenants are atill paying rent. The taxation is, in view of the increasing demands of the publie service, not likely to be greatly diminished, and I hope the Government will lose no time in relieving the tenants on the Win- sloe estate from the burden of paying rent by closing out the estate. ’
