once, it would, no doubt have been much pleasanter aod have prevented ascene of rather unseemly squabbling; but the whole thing was rather pastily got up, notwith - standing which, we believe few or none went away unsatisfied.

At night, the nine o’clock gun was the signal for the illumination to commeuce: and as every house, from the highest to the lowest, wes lighted up, the toute ensemble presented was such as towns of greater pretence might fail to surpass. ‘The appear- ance of Queen’s square was particularly fine. Government House, the Academy, the Court House, the Custom House and Barracks, were all brilliantly illuminated, and even the jaii, denued of its usual ten- ants, shone forth with unwonted splendour. Un the opposite side of the Harbour, a large boo-fire threw a fitful glare upon the water; while to the Southwest a line of fires, along the margin of the water, was seen extending from Canso Point, in frout of Warren farm, in the direction of the block house, for a considerable distance. To whom we are indebted for this exhib- ition, we have yet to learn.

About ten o,clock, there was a display of tire-works on Queen’s Square,and we need not say, that the exhibition was unmerous- ly aud respectably attended. Severna beantifal rockets and other fireworks were also let off from the barrack square, the gate to which seemed to have been sudden- y converted into the entrance to a grotto ; while through the foliage might be discern- ed the grim muzzle of a field piece which made itself heard pretty audibly, at inter- vals, of five minutes during the night.

Up to midnight, the streets were filled with pedestrians, and occasionally # vehic- le might be seen, filled “ith the curious. A better behaved crowd could not have assembled; and by half past twelve, all was as tranquil as if nothiog occured to disturb the usual current of events.
