There entered into rent one of the most highly respected mem- bers of the community when the gentle spirit of Duncan MacCan- nell slipped the bonds of earth on L. morning of January 0. . Although,Duncsn. as he was at- fectionately called by everyone. v. .s in poor health since the sum- mer. his sudden demise came as a great shock to all. Duncan had been tenderly cared for by his wife, and had received the skilled . at.-

shaw, had been in regular attend- ance and it was thought Duncan was improving in health. Though we supposed our friend and neigh- bour was mending he was gently slipping toward the Bar.

Duncan Maccannell. -the son of the late Duncan Maccannell and

Flora MacF'adyen was born '18 years ago at Long Creek. He spent his early childhood

there and gained his education in the Long Creek School. As a youth he learned the trade of carpenter and followed his father as a boat builder.

To answer the call of adventure and ultimately find his appointed niche he joined the numbers of Islanders who went abroad to seek their fortunes. I-ie journeyed as fzir west as Vancouver and spent some time in the lumbering indust- ry there, and sojaurned for s. time in the same calling at Cranbrook. B. C. Following those few years he spent several seasons in the city of Winnipeg as a carpenter and builder. Even the golden wheat- fields lured his venturesome spirit and he followal the prairie trails in harvest time. But these were not for him. He returned to his native Island and went into part- nership with the MacFadyen Brothers in a shingle and saw mill at Canoe Cove. Later he owned the mill property and moved the

mill from its first site to the North side of the Canoe Cove Road. At. the time of" Operating

the mill he was also engaged in the business of boat. building. Af- ter 192'? he gave up the mill and devoted his time to farming. which avocatlon he followed gainfully and studiously.

He will be sadly missed in the community for he was indeed a friend to all. His quiet manner and gentleness of spirit drew young and old to him. and many of us will cherish the memory of quiet counsel that gave us extra cour- age for the tasks ahead.

In his home there will he the longing for the ”tnuch or a van- ished hand and the sound of la voice that. is still." He leaves to mourn the helpmate with whom he' exchanged marriage vows in 1908. the former Jane lnman. To share her sorrow, but in the loss of a. loving father. are two sons, Neil of Toronto and John at home. sl-

Long Creek; Hector who died a victim is. lumbering accident at Van- couver. B. C.. and Neil who died. in 1948; and also one sister, Mary. Mrs. Dan MacKinnon of Quincey. Mriss. ' i

The funeral. under the direct- ion of N. D. Mac-Lean. was con- ducted on Thursday January 11. After a short private service at the home the cortege proceeded to Canoe Oove Presbyterian Church for the final rites. Rev. Donald Nicholson chose Scripture Read- ings which impressed all who heard and forcibly reminded each of us of the eloquent life we had known in our neighbor who had given us again the pattern of arising in the Vwnight.-time for . prayers of thanldulness and praise to our Heavenly Father. The text chosen for the funeral oration was Isaiah 32.17-"And the work of right- eousness quietness and assurance forever." The Psalms sung were: ”The Lord is My Shepherd," and ”I Waived on the Lord. My God." also the Pamphrase "Takc Com- fort."

NEW YORK. Feb. 4 -(AP) - Harness racing's Grand Circuit will open its run at. the Fort Miami Race-way 'in Toledo in- stead of the Roosevelt Raceway in westbury. N. Y.. Octave Blake. president of the Grand Circuit. said Saturday.

The Ohio track, which held its meeting in the fall last year. was awarded spring dates for 1951.hy , the Ohio State Harness Racing Commission. To permit the Toledo oval to have a Grand Circuit pro- gram. Rooscvelt Raceway gave up the first three weeks of its six week Grand Circuit schedule. Thus the Fort. Miami Raceway will have the roaring Grand from May 21 to June 9. Roosevelt will follow for the three-week period starting June 11.
