What can be the matter with Charlot- tetowii's music loving people? After the long winter‘s rehearsing that Mr, Vinnecombe and his _Orchestra have had, to be greeted with such a small « house, must have been indeed discoura - ing. Those not there missed one of a musical events of the season. Such per- severance and patience as the performers must have had to be able to render such ditlicult and beautiful music in so pleas- ing a manner certainly deserves better , encouragement. The Overture “Le . Chevalier Breton" by the Orchestra was well chosen as the first number, its stir- ring strains awakened _the audience to the desired musical pitch. What a host of phantoms and real- ities Start up at these words ! The ghost of .\Ic.-Xdam falls disconsolate on his forsaken shrine; the very stone! cry out for shame ; hoops and tin cans rattle woefully in the gutters ; the scraps and shavings circle sadly in the wind pull‘-i ; the platforms stand on edge, the nails start from their sockets; the mud tugs frantically but vainly at the ankles of the passers by. Vainly, yes vainly, unless the ankles belong to‘ strangers. Nobody else seems to mind it. But there is hardly a hotel smok- ing room in Canada where some com- mercial missionary does not sit him down an idle hour to spend by telling his sag-r listeners how he last crossed the strait and how afterwards he fer- ried himself about the streets of Char- lottetcwn. ,

It is wonderful how people become accustomed to and satisfied with dis- agreeable surroundings. When their surroundings are pleasant and goodly to the eye, people become particular and watchful with jealous pride; but when they become as ours are, people apparently cease to care much. agelicsoired, That we emphatically declare ourselves in favor of that political party, of whatever name or title, that will in- corporate in the party platfurtm the prin- ciple of prohibition of the liquor trrfiic, and that we will not cast our votes for any man, however solemn his pledges _to aid the cause of temperance, who will permit himself to be a candidate for ofllce in a party whose platform favors the liq- uor interests by licence or other methods of regulation, but that here and new we solemnly record our votes for prohibition, pure and simple.

The resolutions were adopted by a rising vote, all but four or five of the Conference voting in favor and none vot- ing against them. _ The position taken in these resolutions is a thoroughly defensive one. In fact, no other position is defensible. The Conference does not propose to carry into the pulpit mere partisan questions._ .It does not propose to turn the church into a campaign areas. But when a great moral question, involving in a most vital degree the work of the church itself, transcending all interests of more party and involving all the dearest interests of the country—-when such a political ques- tion reaches, as it must, the political arena, the New Jersey Conference does not propose simply for that reason to de- sert the cause at the very time their aid will he most eflicient.

The Trio, for piano, violin, and viola was beautifully given, and again and again the listeners called for an encore. The pr ammo was brought to a close with Mr. Fletcher's cornet solo, “Good Night, Farewell” with orchestra accompaniment, and was one of the best pieces given, We must :not forget :Mr. Blanchard who kiudl sang in the place of Mr. Lloyd. Mr. innecombe and Orchestra deserve. much praise for their excellent work and we hope before long to hear more of their sweet music.

But this is only at inter- vals. \Ve get used to these things and nobody knows what they can put up with till they try. We well re- member on returning to Charlotte- town after an absence of several years, how melancholy everything looked. The buildings never seemed so dreary and paintless. The streets—but never mind the streets. Well they have not improved since, but somehow they do not seem so dingy. We have almost ceased to notice these things. It is surprising how so many of us can go along the streets now and not notice anything wrong.

Mr. John O. Arsenanlt, Indian Superintendent at Iennox Island, in his annual report to the Superinten- (lent-General of Indian affairs, says he discerns a very marked and grati- fying improvement in the indus- trial habits of the Indians resid-

ing on the Island reserves. They give more attention to farming than

they did in the past. A. one instance he mentions that they have begun to plant apple trees. With one or two exceptions the Indians, he rays, are sober. The children attend- ing the Lennox Island school are mak- ing fair progress. Two boys left this school three years ago and have at- tended the district school of Port Hill, where they have had a better chance to learn the higher branches. They will be able to teach in a few years.

Let us have one grand and glorious re- vival in the church-—-a revival of manly, straightforward, unflinching courage. and this hoary abuse will come toppling down as otherlmonstrous iniquities have toppled ere now at the voices of undaunted preachers. Reservoir in the Sahara \

PARIS, April 10.—A despatch from Oran says that an enormous ressrvior of water 120 feet below the surface has been discovered at Ellgoles, a small caravan station in the midst of the Sahara desert. The reservoir was discovered while a number of workmen were on ed in siukin a well at Ellgolea. T e shaft sunk eady gives forty gallons of good clear water per minute, and it is expected that this amount can readily be increased should it be found that a large quantity is necessary. The discovery is of the highest importance, and will undoubtedly lead to develop the caravan trade of Elle- olea, which is one of the sto ping places in the Sahara desert. Of t e caravans which trsvell across that region this is the first time that water has been found at so slight a depth in the Sahara.
