MISCHIEVOUS PRANKSTERS - Many motorists on North River Road last night were more than annoyed to find a road block which forced them to detour instead of coming straight in. Complaints to City Police resulted in the latter determining that it was the work of a group of young boys. The"? Md taken it from a nearby street blocked off because of road condi- tions and placed it on the thorough- fare. With the block removed the rrwbctrists were enabled to move freely.

POLICE COURT - Two traffic by-laws cases in the City Police Court on Saturday morning brought fines of sloo. and costs or 20 days to each of the offenders charged with operating a motor vehicle while faculties were im- paired by the use of alcohol. De- fective brakes cost the car operat- or :10 and costs, 'and a case of non-support was adjourned for a week. Two drunk and incapabies were sentenced to 20 days without option and a. third was given 10 days. one other was sentenced to 520 and costs or 10 days and to. and costs or 5 days was given an- other. .Two were remanded for a week.

Pickup Noied In Employment

The Charlottetown office of the Unemployment Insurance Commis- sion reports a further drop in bene- fit claims during the week ending April am.

From a. high of approximately 1750 'in mid-March the total num- ber of claimants has slowly dwind- led to 1852. Of these slightly over l000 were rural residents of King's and Queen's Counties and the re- maining six hundred odd were domiciled in Charlottetown and vicinity. Despite the mild weather there has been no marked indica- tion that seasonal unemplo t is at an end. though some work- ers are returning to their post- winter occupations.

The back-to-work movement will gain momentum this week but principally from the exportation of workers to Labrador. Many men who worked on defence pro- jects last year on this northern frontier of Canada are being re- engaged and many additional men are being signed. Upwards of one hundred all told will 'leave the Province for the north country in the next ten days.

Farm Labor

The Employment Office still has a dozen or more orders for farm laborers on hand. unfilled. Ten farm vacancies were filled during the week by a contingent of Ger- man immlgmnnis.

A second farm labor group from Germany is expected by April iiith. and a. third will reach the Prov. ince by early May. It is felt by immigration officials and Employ- ment offioials alike. that sufficient immigrant fs.rm labor will be available to fill all Island needs this prlng and summer.

Arriving Early

The farm workers are arriving oppomtunely this year, well before the cropping season. Last year irmnigi-ant farm help in any num- bers did not arrive until mid- summ , and many farmers had difficulty in carrying on operations.

In addition to the Gennans, a few Dutch families and occasion- al single Dutch workers are antar- ing the province. No large scale inflow of Dutch people is expect- ed however.

Scxne of the recently arrived Germans speak English well enough to work easily with meir new Island employers. but others are being supplied with German- Enlglisii dictionaries and similar aids to learning English. The Citizenship branch of the Cans- dian Immigration Department sup- plies books and literature to help eucn newcomers learn the new language. The Provincial Depart- ment of Education also arranges classes in English for the immi-

A card party was held in York Com-munityl-fail on Monday night. March 23rd, when s. lolly bunch gathered to chalk up some hlllh points in progressive auction. The ladies' high was Mrs. Peter Proud. Mrs. Frank Watts and others from York reported an evening of enjoyment well spent while they attended the Trinity play. direct- ed by Mrs. Ruby Houle. at Hearts Memorial Hall on Monday even- ing, March 23rd.

The regular shoot of York Rifle Club was held in their club room on Thursday. March 26th, with a record number of shooters from l"est Covehead. Covehcad Road, Stanhcpe,Pa.rkda.le and Charlotte- town. One of the very few Def- fect scores chalked up in York was made by Mr. Raymond Watts of York on Thursday. March 19th. Also on that date Mrs. Raymond Vessey made the highest score of 94 points for the lady shooters.

Princess Ann's Sewing Club of York school held their meeting and sewing period at the school on Tuesday, March 17th, when nearly a perfect attendance of members answered roll call. Due to absence of the president. Miss Carol Hardy. the vice-president, Min Joyce Ling conducted the meeting. Collection was taken and minutes were read and approved. Completion of tea towels. DIN-ha. and knitted square by most mem- bers wss reported. At the next meeting. the writing of a friendly letter will be undertaken.

The presentation of certificates and badges was made to the nine ladies who completed and suc- cessmliy passed the examination set for the First Aid Course by the Canadian Red Cron Branch in Charlottetown. congratulations were extended to the following ladies: Mrs. Howard Watts. Mrs. Peter Proud. Mrs. Raymond Ves- sey. Miss Catherine Wood. . Edison Hardy. Mrs. Lloyd Vessey. Mlnto Foster, Mrs. Frank Vessew. and Mrs. Lewis Vxey. Youngsters 0n ilaft Rescued By Police

Four young lads from Park Street. filled with the spirit of adventure exemplified by Tom Sawyer, had an alarming half hour late yesterday afternoon when the raft on which they had been cruising in comparative safety near I-lillsboro Bridge was carried by the current into fast water.

The boys, who are each about 12 years of age, were unwisciy play- ing on a roomy raft which they found on the west side of the bridge approach near the city end. Shortly after being picked up by

the current and carried into the river. passers-by raised the alarm which was responded to by a. de- tachment of the city fire depart- ment and a couple of city police with the life-saving boat and equipment on a fire truck.
