However two research workers, Drs. J. B. Orr and J. L. Gilks, have been investigating the effects 01 certain diets upon the psysiqus and health of two African tribes, living side by side under similar climatic and hygienic conditions. The diet of one consisted mainly ofnzereals, being very rich in starches and poor in meat, fats and lime. Tbediet of the other consisted mainly of meat, milk and raw blood, a diet ‘too rich in protein (meat) and too, poor in starches and fresh vegetable‘ foods. How did these diets affect these two tribes? . .

Those of the first tribe eating cereals and little meat, fats and lime, were in general of poor phy- sique, and showed poor bony struc- ture, poor teeth, spongy gums, thin blood, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuber- culosis, and rheumatism. _ Those of the second tribe, eating mefli. milk and raw blood, were ‘of much better physique, and were less affected by the above ailments; but- they suffered more from constipa- tion and arthritis (rheumatism) than did the former tribe. I A significant fact was that the young children, the girls and the women of the first tribe, (non meat eaters) had better physiques and better health than the boys and men of the trbe.

Now we are not Africans living under the climatic conditions of Africa. but We are human beings as they, and the food we cat i; bound to be a factor in our health and physique.

Tliey think that their perverted assertions will stick in the popular mind and so make it more difficult for the man on the street to reach a sound decision in the matter.

We find Mr. Mackenzie King saying at London that the Federal Conservative organization received a contribu- tion of $200,000 from Mr. Sweezey and returned it to its source under Mr. Bennett's instructions. There is no foun- dation in fact for any such statement. The contribution was-never made; it was only refused. Just so, we have Hon. G. N. Gordon alleging that General McRae sought $200,000 from Beauharnois and was forced by Mr. Bennett to give it back. This accusation against General McRae is, of course, made out of whole cloth in the hope of confusing and deceiving the people and of making them forget that the Federal Liberal organization received $720,000 from Beauharnois and used it in the 1930 campaign.

Equally untrue is Mr. Gordon’s further assertion that $125,000 of the Beauharnois slush fund went into the Con- servatlve party campaign fund while Hon. G. Howard Fer- guson was leader. Of the same kidney is Mr. Mitchell F. Hepburn’s statement that Right Hon. Arthur Meighen re- ceived a salary of $20,000 as‘ publicity agent of the Hydro- Electric Commission. Mr. Hepburn must have known when he named .that figure that he was doubling Mr. Meighen’s salary as commissioner. Quite in character also was Mr. Hepburn’: further reference to Mr. Bennett's declaration of reliance on Divine Providence for the salvation of Can- ada. The provincial Liberal lender is quoted as saying: ‘_"l‘liat. is agreat admission from a man who has been us- mg the capital ‘I’ for himself and the small ‘g’ for God.” _ We wonderwhere these discredited Oppositionist pol- iticians think they are going to get by the continuous emission ofsuch outrageous misrepresentations, innuen- dos and slanders. It can scarcely have escaped the reading public that‘ while the Beauharnols-financed crowd is en- gagcd in the circulation of political misinformation, the Conservative leaders still_ concentrate their attention on the promotion of the public welfare.
