By ALICE GREEN ALBERTON - An ancient landmark on the outskirts of Al- berton is being demolished as the result of a fire which dam- aged lt beyond repair last week For many years it has been known as the Old Wilkie Home and it had a type of structure that is rare today.

The house was built of pine which is believed to ha vo grown on the farm. It rested on pine sills 10 inches square and some of the pine boards we re more than a foot wide. The out- side walls were constructed wi three layers of boards. the in- her ones upright. the middle

some 30 years ago the sheets of birch bark. which had been used for insulation under the ex- ceptionally wide shingles. were removed. Looking at the ruins of this old home, one is impressed by the sturdiness of its construction and by the hours of hard labor which must have been spent

One marvels at the courage of these early settlers who left a homeland they would never see again, to settle in a land who they knew little. Here they cleared the land. not with ower saws and bull dozers and I tractors, but wit-h tools so prim- Iitive that the young people of today know little of what they were like.

These were men and women who prepared the fertile farm- land of this province, who built homes in which they brought up their children to love and fear

The provincial rose show is being held July 16. and accord- ing to Mrs. Frank Ross, conven or for the affair, growing condi- tions this year are about two weeks behind the usual.

For that reason the show was tentatively going to be re-schc- duled for one week later. but this action seems to have prov ed unnecessary.

“The rose is a challenging flower to grow for exhibition purposes." said Mrs. Ross. “and because of this exhibitors must devote more time than other gardeners to tbs cars of flowers.”

She noted that. last year's large number of entries result- ed in overcrowding, but the dis- play will be re-arranged this year to halibut. dim. 'me show will be held again this year at the Pan-kdale Women's Institute Hall.

It will be open to the public from 3 p.m., but the evening program of special speakers musical selections and presenta- tion of awards is scheduled for

8.30 p.m.

Judges are D. C. Schurman and Robert Snazclle, Charlotte- town, Table centrepieces will be judged by Charles Beasley of the Flower Cart.

Since its inception six years ago the show has been one of

the main attractions for flower lover residents of and visitors to “the province.
