UPEI athletics end year with annual banquet

The Big Party (a.k.a. the UPEI athletics sports banquet) summarized and celebrated the tremendous achievements of our student athletes in the 1996- 1997 season. Here is a short outline of the big winners at UPEI this year.

The award for UPEI’s outstanding female athlete/s went to Tracy McGee (field hockey), and Jennifer Johnston (women’s basketball). The out- standing Male athlete/s award went to Glen Miller (men’s soccer), and Doug Newson (men’s basketball). The Gordon & Muriel Bennett award is presented to a male or female student who had the best combined athletic and academic excellence over four years. This year the Gordon & Muriel Bennett award went to Natisha Rose (women’s vol- leyball). The W.A. Ledwell award is presented to the stu- dent athlete with the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, citizenship, and academic ex- cellence. This year the W.A. Ledwell award went to Chris Diamond (men’s soccer).

There were seventeen student athletes that were

placed on the CIAU academic all-Canadian honour roll (1995- 1996).

Women’s Field Hockey: Colette Gallant and Tracy McGee..

Women’s Soccer: Shawna Garrett, Lori-Ann Howard,Stephanie MacEachern, Natasha Morrison, and Tanya St. John.

Men’s Soccer: Chris Diamond, Chris Gallant, Alex Godfrey, and Ajay Sahajpal.

Hockey: Tyler Ertel.

Women’s Volleyball: Shelly Coulson, Natisha Rose, Reagan Sutherland, and Janet Thomas.

Men’s Scott Morrison.

Basketball:

There were four athletes from UPEI that received CIAU all-Canadian awards.

Field Hockey: Lori Creed, Anne Mamye, and Tracy McGee.

Men’s Soccer: Glen Miller. As forthe individualteam

awards, they go as follows:

Field Hockey: Mildred

MacDonald (outstanding rookie), Jill Anne McDowall (most improved), Cheryl McQuillan (most dedicated), Anne Mamye and Tracy McGee (most valuable).

Men’s Soccer: Matthew Compton (outstanding offen- sive player), James Johnson (outstanding defensive player), David MacMillan (most dedi- cated), John Sutton (Lowell M. Stewart Memorial award), and Glen Miller (most valu- able).

Women's Soccer: Sherri Gallant (outstanding rookie), Stephanie

MacEachern (most dedi- cated), Krystine Dunsford (most improved), and Shawna Garret ( most valuable).

Volleyball: Sarah MacAdam __ (outstanding rookie), Tammy Smallman
