Arroy.—The new ball to be known as “Afton” under cous'truction at West River, bide fair to be one of the finest public halis on the island. The plans were drawn by Mr. B. C. Chappel!, of Charlotte- towa, and the building 1s under the anper- vision of Mr. Hugh McPhee, of Fair View, which in itself is a guarantee that the work will be executed in a most excellent and efficient manner.
Useo tue Cuvrcu Funps.—-The Halifax Citizen says that Pred G. Morris, agrocer who haz been senior warden of St. George’s church, has béen obliged to retire from the position. He had the handling of the church funds and ueed $2,000 in his busi- ness. When an account was demanded he was unable to pay the money. A settlement has been made, Morris executing a second mortgage of $509 oa his house, and giving notes for the remaiader of the amount due.
Witt Never Smoke Acaty.—Living on the Little Buctouche River is a middle- aged gentleman named Ward, who took pleasure in informing every one that he was a grit because of the increase in the tobacco dutics made by Mr. Foster three or four years ago, and that be had then thrown away his pipe and declared he’d never smoke again until the grits got in and reduced the duty, If Mr. Ward bas not broken his pledze erethis, it is not likelv that he ever will, as Mr. Fielding’s tariff will add about ten cents per pound tothe price of tobacco—Moncton Times.
Teacuers’ Insrirute—The_ closing meeting of this institution was held on Saturday evening, and the proceedings were of avery interesting character. It was decided, with a view to enlarging the scope of the institution, that the name be changed to “The Educational Association” of Charlottetown. A committee of seven, consisting of Messrs. Seaman, Owen, Lan- drigan, Arsenault, and Misees MacMurray, Fayne and Wadman was appointed to organize the Association and formulate a plan for next year’s work. The officera- elect for the ensuing year are E.S. Stew- ar’, President, and IraYeo, Secretary. The executive committee will consist of the organization committee. A vote of thanks was tendered the retiring president, secre- tary and Executive Committee for the able, efficient and highly satisfactory man- ner in which they carried on the work of the Institute during the past year.

J. E. Kelly, arrested for the murder of the cashier of the Somersworth Bank, has msde a full confession of his guilt. Kelly was arrested in Annie Ashton’s dive, at Mcntrea}, disguised as a female. It is said that a plea of insanity will be entered in Kelly’s behalf, he having received an injury to his head when be was a child.
Word comes from Philadelphia that the 350 frame houses, built by the Carnegie firm within the enclosure of the mill at Homestead, were destroyed by fire one day last week. The louses were built during the great Homestead strike in 1892 for the protection of their workmen against the strikers. 'welve hundred people will be homeless.
It is stated thatthe Southern Pacific company is mahi og arrangements to build a bridge to cost $5,000,000 across the Mississippi river at New Orleans. This bridge will do away with the transfer by beat of freight and passengers across the Mississippi. It will have double tracks and will cross the river about five miles above New Orleans.
