=2 LAND SURVEYING.

To the Editor of the Colonial Herald.

SIR ;—,-I recently noticed, in the Royal Gazette 'of the 26th Nov. last, a communication from some person styling himself OBSERVER. The writer has so unnecessarily and uncourteously sought to bring into disrepute the professional charac- ters of all who have practised Land Surveying in this Island for the last twenty years, that I think his observations should not be allowed to pass without comment or reply, nor his pretensions without examination.

This OBSERVER says: “From Astronomical observations on both sides of the Meridian Line, used by surveyors for adjusting their compasses, it appears to make a. considerable angle with the true Meridian.”

The Meridian Line used by Surveyors for ad- justing their compasses is that which shews the magnetic position of the needle in the year 1764. The‘angle between this Meridian and the true one is 15 deg. 30 min. Now, as all licensed surveyors in this Island must adjust their com- passes by the said Meridian of I764, it follows, of course, that, although very few compasses ex- actly agree'in their bearings, our surveyors, al- lowing them all to be equally skilful, must cer- tainly agree in practice; for each individual al- lows for the variation of his own compass, what- ever that may be. This agreement in the prac- tice of our surveyors is the first fact which I wish to establish, in my reply to OBSERVER.

Our friend of the Gazette, after. having pretended to discover an error in the line ofwhat, until enlightened by him, we considered to he the true Meridian (and, reflecting upon the falli- bility of mangthe truth of this pretension we are not concerned to deny), next proceeds to say :— I‘ It is just possible that my calculations are in- correct; but if they are confirmed, as I believe they must be, by the observation of any person

it will ‘be quite certain, that besides the many sources of error to which the magnetic needle is unavoidably subject, one is involved, front this cause alone, amounting to nearly two acres on a line of 100 chains, in all surveys of lands exc'cu- ted in this Island for the last twenty years.”

Now, although with OBSERVER I; admit that the ‘iriggnetic‘ needle is subject tocrror, I main- ta‘i'n',‘ thatfwith the aid of the needle and our other usual implements for surveying, a survey of 100 acres can be-made,_iiot involving an error of even one-eightieth part of an acre. I

OBSERVER ought" to know that many of the surveys made in this Island constitute very irre- gular figures, and that we attempt to find their contents without the help of any meridian at all; yet: he asSerts that, in every such surrey, there must, (in consequence of the error stated by him to exist in the Meridian Line.) arise an error amounting to nearly two acres.

I am of opinion, and even modestly so. that for every one bearing the character of a competent Surveyor who can be found to support the latter of the two foregoing assertions, one hundred of unquestionable skill in the art might be produced to maintain the former.

With respect to the alleged error in the Meri- dian Line, Ishall now merely further remark, that, to tnake a triangle equal to 2 acres, on a base of 100 chains, it can only amount to an er- ror so inconsiderable as 13% minutes. Observe, our friend OBSERVER speaks of “ a consider- able angle.”

The two little questions subjoined, I take leave to offer for the amusement of one of OBSER- VEit’s leisure hours ; assuring him that, if he solve them, and, at the same time, prove the as- sertions contained in his communication to the Gazette, I shall certainly admit that he is the only true Surveyor in the Island ; if not, I shall consrder him the most presumptuous of all shal- low pretenders.

eight—— Sin; Perceiving in your paper of the 28th ult. two letters, one from.THOMAS DAViES, Wesleyan Missionary, and the other from A WAYFARING- MAN, in reference to an address to her Ladyship the Countess of Westmorlsnd, and which ap- peared in the Herald of the 14th ult., both of which evidently tend to impress the public mind with an idea that the 56 signatures affixed to that document were spuriously obtained, or, at least, were procured in so loose a manner as that the chief part of them were not fully aware of the nature of, the address; and also of labouring to make it appear that there is but little more than half that number of families in the Back-settlement; and, of course, wish- ing to insinuate that her Ladyship and the public were grossly imposed upon——and in order, therefore, to satisfy her Ladyship of the sincerity of the document—to efi'ace from the public mind even the shade of an imposition— to rectify one of the litany errors which your Reverend correspondent has unfortunately fallen into—and, as courteously as we can, to comply with the request ofA WAVEARING-MAN, who, if he had read with any thing short of ajaundiced eye, would have put the same construction on it that Mr. Davies did, namely, that the adherents to the WESLEYAN ASSOCIATION were throughout the Crapaud settlement at large. and would not then have been at auloss to have ascertained, not only 56, but nearly double that number of adhe- rents and well wishers to the cause.

We, the undersigned, do hereby declare, that we did subscribe our names, or caused our names to be subscribed, with grateful hearts, to the address of thanks referred to, being fully aware oftlie nature and extent of the document at the time in all its bearings; and we are not conscious of more than one signature that can in any shape be called in question, which was that Ofa youth whose father insisted that his name should be set down, and whose heart was so elated with gratitude, that, if he had been in possession ofa dozen boys, he would, doubtless, have had down all their names.
