The lecturer drew the character of Henry the Kighth, Cranmer, Elizabeth, Sir Thomas More, and the principal persons who took part in the strugyle of the times, as viewed by Lingard, Oobbett and Macaulay ; and showed but little merey to the memories of the ‘evil doers’’ in his own comments. The lecturer finished his subject by giving a digest of the penal enactments which were enforced against the Catholics, but which are now, happily, nearly all obliterated. The lecture having taken an hour and a half in its delivery, there was not much time for discussion. A few remarks were made, contrasting the fierce times of the past with the happiness of the present, and that while subjects are discussed which may excite angry feelings, one and all should guard and preserve that blessed freedom which gives a discussiun, and guarantees to every man free and equal rights.

IXAMINATION OF ST. DUNSTAN'S SCHOOLS.

The examination of the above schools took place on Friday, 23d inst. John Kenny and Donald Curry, Ezqrs, of the Central Academy, conducted the examination. In reading, dictation, and in the meaning of words, the boys can scarcely be surpassed. In English Grammar, Geography, and Arith- metic, with the application of the latter mentally to the solu tion of some complex and difficult questions, they are altogether unequalled. Their knowledge of Geometry is surprising, not only in the ready enunciation of the definitions, but also in the correct demonstration of the problems ;. and, therefore, we feel warranted’in stating that the proficiency of the pupils reflects the greatest credit on the teachers, Mr. Roche and his son, for the care and attention bestowed upon the youth entrusted to their care Mr. Kenny expressed his entire satisfaction at the progress made by the pupils since the former examination: The Geographical class excited his wonder and admiration, as ‘* every. question asked,’’ said ho, ‘« has heen most satisfactorily answered.’ ‘The recitation of Byron’s, ‘ My native land,zood night,’’ byMasters Baldwin, Hickey, and Morrissey, was very masterly and effective by lads so young ;-and we question if it could be surpassed by almost any boys even out of their ‘* teens.’’ The scene class in the female’ school equalled that of the boys; Mr. Kenny declsred that he had never heard girls read better. The parsing was likewise very superior, and the knowledge of Geography quite respectable. The writing was remarkably good, and the dictation excellent. Miss McDonald is certainly entitled to public respect, and also the gratitude of the parents of the children and the truateas of the school. for the great | Toficiency of the pupils in the various branches of knowlelign which she has so successfully communicated to them. YOUNG MEN'S CHRISfIAN ASSOCIATION AND LITE- RARY INSTITUTE.

Mr. Silas Barnard lectured on Thursday evening last before this Association, on the ‘* Constituent Elements of Water.’’ The lecture consisted of a series of experiments, illustrating thereby the properties of the two gasses, hydrogen, and oxy- gen, both separately, and in the mixed state. The lecturer commenced with hydrogen, which he extracted from water, explaining at t8@ same time the process by which the hydrogen was liberated. He then kindled it, as it proceed d from the jet, proving thereby its combustibility. He gave further proof on this point by collecting a jar full of the gas whieh he burned, and by w ivh he showed a'so that although combustible in itself, it would not support combustion by drawing a lighted cagdle upward into the inverted jar of gas, when it was immediately extinguished. The next experiment consisted in prodacing musical notes by holding a glass tube vertically over the burning jet of hydrogen. Ile next inflatad smali balloons, and allowed them to rise @ the ce ling, there- by shewing its lightness. His illustrations of the properties OF SE; gen, the great sipporter of combustion eonsisted in born- ing several combustible substances in different jars of this gas, such as steel wire, phosphorous and brimetoue. All his ex- periments hitherto were very successfi}. The next, however, which was to he performed by the gases in a mixed state, was a failure. It was the lecturer's intention to have exhibited the Drummond or Limebai! Light, whieh is produced by a jet of the mixed gases operating on a piece of lime stome. The failure was occasioued on accounts of the imperfect state of the gas holders—one of the gasses being very subtle, had eacaped. He exploded sume small portions of the mixed gasez, which i were accompanied by deafening detonations. The lecturer, throughout the whole course of the lecture, gave very clear explinations concerning the several experiments, and indi- cated a thorough knowledg» of the subject he discussed. The large and interested audience intimated their gratification by frequent and vigorious cheering. Mr. Barnard expressed his regret at having failed in his primcipal experiment, and in- formed his audience that they were not more disappointed than he himself was. It is likely he will shortly favour us with a sight of the Limestone Light, either at the Mechanics’ Insti- tute, or at the same Institution.— Com. :
