Ix tar Trexca.—A fat pig fellinto the waterworks trench on the Malpeque Road yesterday. The animal fitted the trench very tightly, and it took several men to pull him out, which was done with much grunting and many plaintive squeaks on the part of the porker.

Tanton, watchmaker and jeweler, of this city, while visiting his wife's father at Southport, yesterday, accidentally cut the back of his hand, a little below the wrist, with a hatchet. severing the principal erteries. PLaykway Extenston.—It is pleasing to note that a new platform is being placed on the west sidewalk of Lower Great George Street. We hope that it will be extended over the space in front of the Bishop's Palace. This space is very muddy inthe spring and fall, and citizens as they plodded over it, have often wondered why it was so long left with- out a plankway. We feel confident that Mr. Smith will have pleasure in superintending the work, as soon as the necessary order from the Street Committee is received by him.

To-morrow.—Do not forget the mammoth excursion and tea to Cape Traverse to-morrow. Every arrangement has been made for the comfort and pleasure of those who attend. The trains have been arranged to run right through to Cape Traverse, without delay, returning at ae cool and seasonable hour in t e evening, thus giving ample time to “ do the tea, participate in the amusements, enjoy asail, and stroll around the shores. Three revolving swings, a shooting gallery, three dancing booths, quoits, and other amuse- mente, will be provided, while music will be furnished by two Highland pipers, and several of the best violinists in the province. The tea tables of which there will be twelve, and the refreshment saloons, will be well supplied

2 FREDERICTON, July 2. 'o-day dawned beautifully fine and the citizens with the numerous visitors who had arrived on Saturday and Sunday, were astir early to witness the celebration events. The programme from beginning

firemen feel justly proud that their efforts so enthusiastically backed by the citizens to make the day a memorable one, were fully rewarded. The visitors numbered nearly 4,000, but all were taken care of by the numerous hotels, boarding houses and lunch rooms. There was excellent order throughout. The first feature of the cele- bration was the polymorphian procession. rhe display was very fine and there were some excellent and original representations. The tiremen’s races were called at 2 p. m. on Queen Street.
In the hose Houlton took first prize, $100; Fredericton second, $50. Time, lm. 2ls. The 100 yards race, free to all, had six entries. There was a lively tussle for first place. Cliff, of St. Mary’s, won the prize, $10, time 114s., with Scott, of St. John, a close second. In the half mile race for amateurs, Charles O'Reilly, of St. John, captured the prize, a hand- some silver pitcher. There were only two entries for the hook and ladder r ce, Houlton and Fredericton. Houlton captured first prize, $50, time 2.363, Fredericton’s being 2.38}—the dis- tance was 200 yards. This evening the firemen had a torchlight procession. There was quite a general illumination, and the day's celebration closed with a splendid display of fireworks on Parliament Square.

Stanley's Fate.
Lonvon, July 2.
The steamer Volta has arrived at Liver- pool, with Congo despatches to May 27th, which give further details concerning the camp on the Aruwhimi. The camp was suffering from lack of food and maladies arising from the surrounding swamps. A reconnoitering party, which advanced along Stanley’s route, passed quantities of human bones, apparently the remains of victims fallen in fights between Stanley’s followers and the natives. No relief was received by the vamp from Col. Tib. Major Bartlett, believing Stanley to be not more than 500 miles beyond the camp in the direction of Khartoum, was preparing to strike his tents, push on and join him.
Diocesan Synod. Hatrrax, July 2.
The Diocesan Synod to-day discussed propositions looking to the consolidation of Kings College with Dalhousie of Halifax. The resolution was strongly supported by Bishop Courtney, W. C. Silver, Archdeacon Gilpin, Hon. A. G. Jones and Rev. Dr. Hole, and will doubtless be carried when the vote is take n to-morrow.
A committee of five was appointed to act with Bishop Courtney and the executive committee in removing rectors from parishes when two-thirds of the parishioners petition therefor.
Fire! Fire! Truro, N. S., July 2.
At six o’clock to-day a fire broke out in the extensive peg factoryof J. Lewis & Sons, consuming all their buildings and two or three buildings in the neighborhood, barns, carpenter shops, etc. Messrs. Lewis’ loss will probably amount to $50,000. ‘There is no insurance. Lewis & Sons shipped largely tothe Upper Pro- vinces.

Dominion Day was quietly observed yes- terday. The weather was beautiful. Most
There was cricket and | lawn tennis at the Park in the afternoon, but the games did not have the effect of at- tracting a great many people to that local- ity. The tea at Hunter River was largely at- tended and very successful. Seven carloads of people left town for there yesterday | morning. The other teas were also well at- ‘ended and successful.
Upwards of two hundred people went to Pictou in the Princess of Wales. The majority of them attended the Bazaar and games in aid of the Stella Maria Convent, which they report passed off successfully. The steamer returned about eleven o’clock last night, all the excursionists being well pleased with the trip.
The excursion to Brule in the Heather Belle was not so largely attended as ex- pected—only about fifty persons taking ad- vantage of the trip, which was a very pleasant one.
There was more than the usual number of private picnics and fishing parties, and as a result some tall stories are in circula- tion to-day.

Mr. Fred. Anderson, son of Dr. Anderson, of Prince of Wales College, arrived home last evening from the Royal Military College, Kingston, where he has completed his second year of the course.
M. McKinnon, of Lincoln, Neb., Car Ac- countant of the B. & M. R. R., has been attending the recent Convention of Car Accountants of Canada and the United States at Montreal, and is now spending a few days with his friends at Uigg before reg turning to the West.
