Useful Hints for Measuring Land.

—_—

Almost every farmer has some way of measuring land, and the most common is to step off five paces for a rod and call sixty by sixty-five paces an acre. For ordinary purposes this mode will answer, but when | the exact measurement of a piece of land is desired it cannot be depended upon as being accurate.

A light pole just sixteen anda half feet | long isa cheop and convenient measure, but a four rod tape line is much better.

An exact acre can be found by the fol- lowing table of distances :—

A plot of ground, eighty yards wide by

sixty-nine and one-half yards long contains Steal Communication

one acre. A. plot of ground seventy yards wide by |

sixty-nine and one-seventh yards long, con- tains one acre.

A plot of ground 240 feet long by 181} feet wide contains one acre. One acre con- tains 160 square rods or 43,560 square feet.

One rod contains 2,025 square yards, 57,225 square feet.

The (//obe estimates the revenue of the Dominion for thegiscal year which has jost closed at $52,000,000, and proceeds to con- trast it with the revenue of $22,375,000 collected in 1878, the last year of the Mac- kenzie Government, drawing the inference that the taxation has been augmented by more than $9,000,000. In order to ascer- tain the increase in the whole taxation the deficit of 1878 ought properly to be added to the revenue of that year, since it prac- tically involved a burden upon the people through the necessary addition to the pub lic debt thus occasioned. But for the purposes of comparison of the relative tax- ation at different periods, it would be quite aa reasonable to contrast the revenue col- lected in 1867 with that obtained last year, The real measure of the burden imposed by the Government is not the gross re- venue, but the taxation per head of the population. To adopt the reasoning of the Globe is to assume that the country has neither increased in population, wealth or the individual prosperity of the people since 1878, a pretention which is palpably absurd. The actual taxation to-day is no greater than it was in 1876, 1877 and 1878, if the deficit of these years on the one hand, and the surplus of the last year on the other are deducted.

Charlottetown, and fronting on Sidney Street,

that is to say, the northern moieties or equal

half parts of Lots number twenty-six and twenty-seven, in the second hundred of

Town Lots, in Charlottetown aforesaid, the

said lots being divided by a line running at

right angles with Prince Street, equi distant from Sydney Street and Dorchester Street, through the entre of the said lots until it strikes the western part of lot number twenty- eight in the same hundred as the said lots are laid down and delineated in a certain plan or map of Charlottetown, made, and now kept in the office of the Registrar of Deeds of the said

Island; together with the dwelling house,

aud all other houses and buildings thereon

erected, and the rights, members, and appur- tenances thereunto belonging, or in anywise appertaining.
