Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line pie plate with pastry. Trim edge even with pie plate. In double boiler top. cream brown sugar and butter. stir in granulated sugar. eggs. salty corn syrup and cream. Cook over hot water tnot boiling! five nmiutcs. stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in broken nuts and van- illa.

Visitors to the garden these sum- mer days say..."It is so restful here." and we rest. awhile and talk about gardens and flowers.

There are many fragrant flow- ers in bloom; roses and pinks or tGilliflowem) as they were called as long ago as 1463 when Edward IV of England's portrait shows him holding a red carnation in his royal hand. It was probably the first of what we call florist's flowers. the first upon which hy- bridlzation was practically per- formed. In any case it was the first flower to have an entire book de- voted to it.

Centuries of care and devotion have gone to develop our modern carnation from the insignificant little Clove Pink, Dianthua Caryo- phyllus, that grows all over south- ern Europe from the sunny lime- stone cliffs of the Pyrenees to the great plains of the Ukraine. Grown by the Greeks long before the Christian Era, it became known as Dianthus. the Divine Flower. a name that was later adopted for the whole clan. The flowers have long been valued for their scent and beauty and it was from their use in garlands. Coronae, that the common mime ”Carnation" ls deri- vcd.

Although it is often met with on the chalky downs of southern England there seems some doubt. as to the Clove Pink being s true native of the British Isles; some authorities believe that lt became naturalized from specimens brought from Europe as garden plants by knights returning from the crusades. There is a tradition that it was brought. over from the sunny gardens of Normandy :- bout tlie time of William the Con- qiieror but. whether as a reminder of the homes they had left behind or accidentally with the stone used in some of their castles, is un- known. In this respect it. is of in- terest. to know that it may still be gathered from the rocky pro- minence on which stand the walls of the ancient fortress of Faliiise in Normandy, where William was born.

By the middle of the sixteenth century garden varieties were sl- rcady showing so much improve- ment on the wild type that many lovely flowers were produced with the spicy fragrance and attractive coloring. that we know today.

In this garden there have been fraizmiit pinks for many years. Each spring ii few packets of seed zirc planted and there are never enough to suit me. Dozens of var- ieties have been grown and all of them are very fragrant. They :irr'. lovely for cut flowers and the foliage is also attractive to use uith the flowers. After blooming they can be trimmed and then will have some flowers all season.

PRINCIPLES OF TREATMENT. OF CANCER.

We must admit in the first place that up to now we do not know what causes the body cells to take on the characteristics of cancer nor do we know how to prevent this happening. However wo do know that if all the malignant tcanccr) cells canbe removed or destroyed. we will obtain cures which will al- low our patients to live in comfort through a. normal life span.

Before mentioning treatment. let us see how cancer spreads. It spreads in three ways: (I) by spread- ing through tissue space, that in. by taking up more and more room as the cancer cells multiply at a fan- taatic rate of speed. and so en- croaching on other organs and so destroying them. (2) by way of the lymph nodes. and (3) by the blood stream to distant organs.

Now how can we remove or des- troy these malignant oells7 Let in look nrat at surgery. The surgical treatment of cancer. aiming at a cure, requires the removal of the primary growth (the cancer Il"”'”'l itself) and of the lymphatic field around it to prevent Its . This should be done by surgeons of great experience and training and it is wrong for the surgeon who oper- ates only occasionally to tackle such an intricate procedure. For Instance in cancer of the breast it may be necessary to remove not only the breast itself but also the whole path of the lymph stream out to the armpit.

More recently, we have the radio- logfcsd treatment of cancer. that is treatment by radium or X-rav. Its object is not the removal of the cancerous growth but the destruc- tion of it and its scattered cells wherever they maybe. This is pos- sible because cancer cells are more sensitive to the rays than are nor- mal cells. It is the constant effort. therefore. of the radiologist to de- vclop rays of sufficient strength and penetrating power to reach all the cancer cells and destroy them. without injury to the surrounding tissues. The radiologist has been most successful inthe treatment of surface cancers such as those of the skin. the lip. the tongue. the larynx and the uterus. Nowadays thue cancers are usually treated by x-ray or radium and not by surgery.
