The absence of scurvey among the crew of Prof. Nordenskjold’s exploring vessel, the Veya, is attributed by him as due to tho free use of a little berry which springs from tle ice and snow of the Arctic re- gions, During the summer it is very plen- tiful, has the flavor of raspberry, and, when dried, is mixed with the milk of the rein- deer. The mixture thus obtained can be carried thousands of miles without spoiling,

The Chief Justice of England is paid $40,000 a year, the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and the Chief Baron $35,- 000 each, and the Master of the Rolls (who has not to go on circuit), $30,000. The puisne judges are paid $25,000, out of which they have to pay probably about $2,500 a year for circuit expenses. Be- sides this, all the presidents of divisions have extremely valuable patronage.

The Antiquary says the largest oak in England is one in the Parish of Cowthorpe, West Riding of Yorkshire. It is hollow, and fortymen could stand within its trunk. It is believed to be about 1500 years old. The boughs extended fifty feet from the trunk « few years ago.

Lost ar Sza.—Edward J. McDena'd, e'dest son of the late James McDonald, Esq., Kings- boro, Lot 47, mate of the schooner Mary Jane accidentally fell overboard on the night of the 19th inst., when near Cape North and was drewaed. The deceased was a yoang man ol exemplary character, and his sudden and un- timely death is deplored by mauy friends and acquaintances. We teader our sympathies to his aged mother in this her deep afiliction.

A Sreamer FoR ENGLanp.—Enquiries’ are being made in this city relative to the amount of freight, especially of live ecattie, which can be secured fora steamer sailing direct from St. John for England. It is said that a steam- er leaving St. John within a month can get at least 300 head of cattle. Then there are the up-river districts, Sackville, Nova Scotia and P. E. Island to be heard from. The prospect of securing a steamer is brightening. —S¢. John Sun.

A Mopet-Son-1xn-Law.—A son-in-law, who is evidently not possessed of that care which otaers are of their fatherin-law’s goods and chattles, rashly speculated on his account and in his absence sold at a fair price a cow, a pig, two sheep, together with sundry chaitle —all the property of his aforesaid father-in law. With the proceeds of the sale he revelled by night, but not by day, for he was ar- rested in a state of beastly intoxication, with the grearter portion of the proceeds on his per- son. He was arraigned before the Stipen- diry Magistrate to-day, when the usual fine was imposed. The proceeds of sale are still in the hands of the police, and will be, 20 doubt, returned to the father-in-law.

Horriste Tracrepy.—A fearful tragedy recently took place at Tizzard’s Harbor, New- foondiand, resulting in the death of a man named Pierce Cantwell, at the hands of his brother Nicholas Cantwell. It appears that a a fish flake belonging to Cantwell has been for some days past pestered with dogs who destroyed a quantity of fish, and, notwith- standing a vigilant watch for these brutes, they could not be discovered, On the evening mentioned Nicholas Cantwell observed what he thought to be a dog prowling over the flake—it being dark and rainy at the time. He immediately got his gun and fired at it, kifling it on the spot, but on approaching the body, imagine the poor feilow’s horror whea he discovered that he had shot and killed his own brother. .

Tue system of prosecution under which Rev. Dr. Dix, of New York, lately suffered, by which persons continually ealled upon him in response to advertisements which he was supposed to have inserted in the papers, has heen imitated in au English town, where people of all professions and trades were brought together at a certain house. Three ldoctors came to attend a supposed case of child birth; a car ‘iage and pair came to take the lady to an asylum ; two dentists came to extract her teeth ; an undertaker was on hand to take her measure for a coffin; and pur- veyors of bably linen, upholsterers, furniture dealers and others congregated simultaneously ‘at the house in question. No clue has yet been found to the discovery of the hoaxer.
