Kemplen, a town in Holland on the lower Khine (the birthplace of Thomas a Kempis), is a favorite residence of people with smail ine The imagination of these Dutchmen income, judging from the drei] atories that are told of tnem.

At one time age was done be« bepalr. Ihe council met, and sfter much argument it was voted that on the eve pre- ceding every fire the town officers shuu'd carefully examine the engines, pumps, etc.

Oae of the greatest proiits of the town was the toll exacted at the gates. The council wished to increase the income, and instead of increasing the toll it voted to double the num. ber of gates.

This same council also ordered the sun-dial to be taken from the court house common and placed under cover, where it would be pro. tected trom the weather.

But of ali the queer things that are told of Kemp«n and its people nothing is co absurd as this: Grass grew on the top of a very high tower, and the only way these droil Datchmen could think of to ges it off was to ‘hoist a cow up and let her eat it.’

If the old hens will only shell out the eggs now, thinks many a mother, | can avon get beck all the mouey taken for Christmas. The surest way we have heard to get it back is this: E A Hubbard of Hatfield, Mass., says, **About one year ago | sent $5 for six cans of Sheri- dan's Condition Powder to make hens lay, and in Jsuuary my *wenty-eight hens laid twenty-nine dezsn eggs.
