'I1he author gives a plan and des- crlption of Charlottetown which n. describes as being built "on a promontory on the north side of a trident-shaped estuary." The “checkerboard pattern" of the streets "was carried out ruthlessly. but one improvement was to arrange for four small parks." He finds that the main churches have almost all developed in a belt which includes these parks.

The zones of the city are clas- sified and a diagram given to which the author adds extensive notes. "As is usually the case," he writes "the original houses within the city have declined in status, and are now mainly of third-class character. The better houses are naturally found toward the park, and in the higher land to the northwest and north- east. ‘Ilhe wharves and the railway areas have attracted the factories and the poorer houses. This tends to give us a zone of better dwellings

There is a sketch of the main houses and shops near thc junction of Queen and Grafton Streets in 1870, based on illustriv, tions in the old "Prince Edward‘ Island Magazine". Four photo- graphs show various old buildings still visible in the city, including Government House and the Pro- vincial Building, which is described as "a pleasing example of official Renaissance architecture." The‘ city itself is classified by this nu-i thority as being “in the ‘Early Ma- ture’ stage of evolution."
