New Brunswick and P. B. Island | Methodist Conference at Moncton.

SECOND DAY. (Special Corresponderce of the Examiner.)

The Conference re-opened by singing and prayer,the Secretary } ead the Journal.

A communication was received from the Dominion Temperenee Ailiance asking the Conference to take sgme action about the Seott Act with the view of better enforcing it.

A telegram was recoived from the Nova Seotia Conference requesting this Confer- ence toappoint a Coinmittee to consider the state of the Superaumerary Fand and te meet a similar committee by that Con- ference. Onmetion of Dr. Pope a com- mittee was appointed from amongst the members of the present Supernumerary Committee.

Rev. Geo. H. Cornish, of the London Conference, was requested to address the Conference, which he did. Afterwards a resolution was passed commending ‘his encyclopedia of Methodism, upon which he has been engaged 18 years, to the minis- ters, and urging them to buy it. The work is highly spoken of by all that Aave seen it.

Revs. W. W. Lodgs and Aquila Lucas were appointed a Committee to disburse the Conference collection.

PROBATIONS Foi. THE MINISTRY.

Rev's. Estey, C. >. Wells, and W. C Johnston, A..B., were reported as having Guished their probation, and were recom- mended to be regeive:| into full connection and ordained, subject to an examination on Monday morning.

Rev's. D. Daviess Moore, A. B., and J. W. Wadman, A. B., were reported ‘as having travelled two years.

Rev's. S. B. Gregg, A. B., Thos. Pieree and C. Bell, were reperted as having travelled one year.

Messrs. Clement ‘Villiams, J. W. Tait, Fred. Black, and 8S. | loward, were received ov trial.

Rev's. A. D. McCully, A. B., and W. B. Thomas, were grante.. permission to return to Cullege, for another year each.

A letter was read from Mr. A. Hagarty, asking permission to retire from the minis try on account of continued ill-health. His request was granted.

The following supernumearry Ministers were reported Rev’s. H. Daniel, J. A. Clarke, A. M., J. R. Narraway, A. M., 5. W. Sprague, H. Pc , D. D., Fred. W. Harrison, George B. Payson, H. Pickard, D. D., J. V. Jost. and F. Smallwood.

Rev. R. W. Weddall, A. B., was granted permission to rest for three months, and to take a trip for the good of his health.

Revs. Edwin Mills and C. W. Dutcher were granted permission to become sup*r- numeraries because of the feeble state of their health. Rev. J. J.Coller,who has been resting for some yeors, returns to circuit work again. Rev. W. W. Percival has been transferred to tlie Newfoundland con- ference, and the Job Shenton has been transferred to this conference.

EDUC4TIONAL MEBTINGS,.

The Annual Conference Educational Meeting was held in the evening, presided over by Dr. Pickard. There was a large congregation present ; but not as large as on the preceding evening. Un the platform were Revs. Dr. Pickard, H. McKeown, T. J. Deinstadt, Prof. Burwash, G. H. Cora- ish, ef the ‘London Conference, aud Job Shenton. Prayer was offered by Rev. H. McKeown. The Chairman regretted that the weakness of the President prevented him from occupying the chair.. He was sure that the educational enterprise needed not to be commended to their sympathy. It is of such primary \mportance as to com- mend itseif to every } atelligent Methodist.

. The object of this | Society is to maintain our Universities and Co-leges and to enable young men to obtain a training for our ministry.

Rev. T. J. Deinstadt, Secretary, read a brief report which showed that the totai amount raised by tie church had been $5,820.58, and the saine amount had been expended. This Corfererice had raised $570.63, being a deervase of $4.08 for the year.

Rev. Prof. Burwash was the first speaker. After expressing sorrow that the regular deputation had failed, he delivered a most eloquent and powerful appeal in favor of higher education being underjthe control of the chureb. The objects of this Edacation- al Seciety were threefold: 1, to give to our ehurch an educated inistry; 2, to give to us a sanctified laity; “, to create centres of thought. On the first and third parts of his subject he delivered a grand speech which was received :aost heartily. by the people.

Rev. Job, Shenton speke at length upon the state of education in Newfeundland. He said that there they had a system of denominatial common education which he claimed was best for them, although he was of opinion that common | ought to

Rev. D. D. Currie made a humorous and effective speech. ‘He declared himself in favor of general education. People should be educated all round. He referred to the establishment of schools of cookery, and claimed that there should be education in the household. It is important that per- sons should be educated in their particular callings. The ministers should be educated. While children attead the common, schvols they are at home under the oo of their parents; but when they go to college hey. are no longer under t) _ parent’s care. is necessary that they should be placed where their moral ae religious character will be developed.

expressed the gravest alarm at the idea of the

est from all consideration of rent, in fixing a fair rental of a holding. The fear was ex-

pressed that in the absence of some definite instruction the Court may feel bound to apply the existing common law doctrine that every.

lord, this doctrine being corrected only by the resérvation of the tenants* actual improve-

ments, whereas the delegates hold that beside his improvements his good will or occupancy in right sheuld be protected.

In the House of Commons to-day Gladstone said he weuld consult his colleagues on the advisability of continuing the debate on the; Land Bill aaety:
