The slim figure, flitting up the path, sinks down on the worn door-sill of the fight-house, anxiously watching the dark, warning clouds that creep over the sky in advance of the on-coming night.

Mark Sefton, the keeper of the lght, had gone to Rocky Point early that morning, and all the way the partirg words of his pretty young wife haunted him, try as hard as he would to forget them.

“Don’t go, Mark,” she had pleaded, earnestly. “I feel sure something w.!l happen before you return. I have a prc- sentment—”

“Nonsense,” he had cut in, with «a hearty, cheery laugh. “Don’t be foolish and whimsical, Nella. Nothing is going to happen. Nothing could happen. I shall be back before the storm and in time to light up.”

Darkness had crept on, the burst. but where was Mark?

With winged feet Nella up the spiral stairway that led to the sumimii of the great tower. A moment more and a broad glare of light shot out f om the great lamp, sending a ruddy glow over the vortex of seething waters tht iashed the walls of the old light-house till it trembled and rocked on its foun- dation.
