The Old Craddock mansion, a brick building standing less than jour miles trom the business centre of Boston, is the oldest house in the United States, and although more than 250 years old is still in a good state of preservation. Craddock’s people came into a wilder- ness inhabited by wild beasts and Indians. It is likely that they classed these together, and thought them all wild beasts. But they deemed the Indians the more dangerous, and they built their house accordingly. It was of bricks made on the spot, roughly but well. These bricks are only a little larger than those made to-day in the yards close by, and one finds it hard to believe that they have laid there 251 years. The walls have that streaked look which all our very old brick houses have, just as if some Titian bad thrown half a dozen bogsheads of whitewash at the house for the fuo of it. But the most interesting thing about the wails is their thickness, eighteen inches solid ! This of course was for protection against the wily savage. In either end were hugh chimneys, but one of these has made way for a modern chimney. Io the other the fireplaces are just as they were made, big enough to hoid hugh logs. The brick oven close by, still bakes weil, or did the last time it was used. Thecrane on which were hung the pots and kettles is still in its place. Underneath part of the house isasmali cellar, with heavy arches here and there. The beams show in all the rooms. The largest of them are held to the walls by iron braces. The garret is wofinished aud is lighted only by asmail skylight and two windows in one eod, The timbers seem sound enougb, but one end of the houre de- cayed so that ithad to be rebuilt a while ago and one storey additions at that eod destroy somewhat the antique effect. The eval porthelees have beeo stopped up. The windows are small and there are half a dozen panes in each sash. As they have been enlarged somewhat you can imagine how dark the house must have been when it was built. The root has swerved a little, and a dormer window is gone. But al! these changes have not aifected the ex- terior to any great extent, and it looks to-day much asitdid when Matthew Craddock’s plantation was flourishing. NOTES.
