1. Two hearts. There is a con- flict between the desire to mold the good six-card diamond suit and to show the heart support. As is usual in such cases, the deci- sion is resolved depending upon the overall strength of the hand.

A two heart bid is more en- couraging than two diamonds. Whatever is the value of part- ner’s hand standing by itself. the heart raise is more am to sti- mulate a further bid from him than would the rather weak-sound ing tho diamond bid.

Nor does the hand (unal- ify as a jump shift to 3 clubs. The only other possible bid-four hearts—woldd constitute an over- bid. If North cannot respond to three hearts, the chances are we don’t belong in game.

4. Four ,notnnnp. Point count ﬂies out the window in hands of this sort. The important thing is to know how many aces North has. If he responds to the Black- wood bid with time clubs. showing no aces, we quit at five hearts.

If North shows one ace by bid~ ding five diamonds. it is reason- able to jump to six hearts. The chances are only one trick will be ost.

If North bids five hearts. iden- tifying two aces we would recom- mend a seven heart bid. A trick might be lost to a red queen.

TORONTO (OPl—The Bank of Nova Scotia Wednesday an- nounced an aggressive move into the personal loan field. I

It said that. starting Oct. 15, it will introduce “a complete con- sumer loan and instalment credit service to be known as Scotia Plan Mans."

The loans will be repayable by monthly instalments and will be at effective interest rates nearly double those of ordinary bank in- terest, but as much lower rates than is generally available for consumer financing:

The result of the move will de- pend on these three factors:

1. The extent to which the bank, in practice,.will find itself able to extend its loans into fields which banks. in the past. have generally regarded as too risky for bank activities.

2. The extent to which the pub- lic—which to date has tended to think of banks as beyond their

They are the News Mirror and Times.

Starting this weekend. the price of The Sunday News will be in- creased to 15 cents from 10, be- yond the city’s suburbs. or out- side a radius of roughly 50 miles.
