The land grant to McKenzie and Mann wae nearly four times that amount. The slopes were Jined with timber, and with the priv- ileges of leasing timber mits which the contractors enjoyed they might just as well bavetheclain.s. The miners could not get along without timber, which was indispen- sable for thawing the frozen soul, but they could obtain it only on such terms as McKerzie and Maon might dictate. When the length of claims was cut down from 500 to 100 feet prospecting stopped. Miners were not willing to risk their lives for the limited opportunities thus offered. He contrasted the position of the free miner, who had to pay licence fees and ten per cent. royalty, with that of McKenzie and Mann, who would pay no license fees and one per cent. He prote-ted ayainst the establishment of such an autocracy in the country. One of the Ministers said to him,“ Probably Mc- Kenzie and Mann would give you better termes than the Government regulations. ” What a position this was to put Canada into, to place these contractors in a su- perior position tothe Government itself, Canada had a wonderful inheritance in that northern empire, and it was of tre mendous importance that it should be established on a firm and just foundarion.

TO CANAL THE YUKON.

The chief speaker was Mr. Livernaeh, who argued that by constructing a canal 1 through the flat district of the Yukon would be possible to transport freight more cheaply than by the Stickeeo river, At present for five months of the vear, which is all thatthe Stickeen route is open for, tran-portation by the Yukon river can be done just as cheaply.

Barn Dastrurep.—The Summerside

including a quantity of grain and a new Massey Harris binder. Mr. Jardine’s loss is estimated at $400. The fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary.

C.M. B. A.—On Wednesday night last branch 261, of the C. M. B. A., at Souris was visited, addressea and inspected by Provincial Deputy, Rev. Father Burke, of Alberton. The reverend gentleman found the branch in @ most satisfactory condition, and in his very appropriate re-~ marks took occasion to congratulate all concerned. Speeches of welcome and thanks tothe Rev. Opera Hovusk.—Prof. Wm. Lawrence, who is billed to appear at the Opera House, is a hypnotist of more than ordin- ary ability. His mind reading is wonder~ ful; his feats in hypnotism still more Fo. Some of the features of the Professors entertainments that will be produced here are the rock-breaking test and cata- lepsy, placing of a man upon two chairs with head upon back of one and feet on back of the other and allowing three men tostand upon him. The rock~breaking is the same state as above except that they break atwo hundred pound rock on the subject. He will also have a teleptone put vpon the stage and put the subject to sleep and in astate of catalepsy by tele~ plone from the hotel]. He uses our own towns people for hig entire entertainment.
