Many~days she watched for his return, and when she found he came not, her affections began to wind themselves round Lady Elean- or, and she began to listen with a truthful and conﬁding heart to her soothing words.-— Soon that happy abandonment of spirit, with whic childhOod itselfgives up to the plea- sures of the passing hour gave the mm: to her cheek and sunshine to her brow. The old castle began to echo to her footsteps, and mirthful laugh, and the clear, bird—like music ofher voice . With the dog by her side,the‘ same that regarded her and her pro- tector so suspiciously the night of their arrival at the castle, she soon began to wander by the shores of the wild mountain stream, to explore the recesses ofthe deep and solemn fo- rest, and to roam over the breezy hill, her dark locks ﬂoating on the wind.

Public Auctions. Not that [object to this long established and very general mode of disposing of proper- ty—but, rather the irresistible pro- pensity that some individuals have of spending their money there in arti- cles, which, it'not become totally use: less, prove too often so to the. buyer.

My wife, Sir. is unfortunately im- bued with this predilection. bhe is a good and worthy soul in all other respects, but in this particular, she must have her own way: to reason with her is but loss ofbreath; and the various means and oven devices I have used to cure it, have all been unstre- cessful; so that I begin to fear, the debts she is constantly contracting in this way, will bring to auction my own little effects some ofthese knock- ing-oﬂ'tlays. You Would hardly be- lieve, Sir, the amount I have to pay every year for auction bills, and the numerous useless articles and trump- ery that now encumberlrny rooms.

We‘ve got, I am sure. seventeen pairs of brass candlesticks, five or six extra old bedroom carpets, six or seven old motionless clocks, as many broken sets of China, thirteen or fourteen ladies’ work-boxes, five or six crazy fire-screens, ten or fifteen leaky coﬂ‘ee pots -a garret full oi‘old ’ chairs and tables, besides hosts of tea caddies, sugar-tongs, glass beads, horn buttons and other small wares too numerous to mention as the auc- tioneers themselves truly say. In fact, Sir, nothing comes amiss to my infatuated wife when she’s in the spi- rit of purchasing, and that is when- ever she goes to an auction, and that is whenever and wherever there‘is one going on within or near the town.

Not much more than a twelve- month ago,l was met at my door by a lad bringing home a cradle, which he said my wrfe hadjust bought; and, would you believe it, Mr. iditor,-—- (we have already two)-—our youngest child is now nearly twelve years old, and my wife getting on to her six- tieth year ! Upon remonstrating with her on this waste. of money, she at last quite lost her temper. " What you stupid man,”—she «bserved,-— “ don’t, I tell you it’s dirt cheap. a dead bargain,” SLc. The New Orleans Picayune of the 220, has the following account' of another tuost melancholy catastrophe :

‘ By the arrival of the Buckeye. we bare the following in an extra from the Louisi- ana Chronicle :

It has become our rnournful duty to record one ofthe most terrible calarnitie that ever happened on the Mississippi Yesterday, as the steamer Clipper Not was bucking out from the moorings at our landing, she blew up, with an explosiot that shook-the earth,air and heaven, It though the walls of the world were tum- bling together about our ears. All the boilers burst simulttrneouslymtuachinery. vast fragments of the boilers, huge pieces of timber, and human beihgsin every degree of mutilation, were uliltt shot perpendicularly many hundred fa- thorns in the air.

0n reaching the greatest height, the various bodies diverged like the jelsnl a fountain in all directions— falling to the earth, and upon roofs of houses, in some instances as much as two hundred and ﬁfty yards from the scene ofdestruction. The hapless victims were scaltled,cruslt- ed, torn, mangled and scattered in every possible direction—many into the rivet. some into the streets, some on the other side of the haven, nearly 300 yards— some torn asunder by coming in t‘tllllrltl with pickets and posts, and others slmt like cartoon balls through the solid \vali of houses at a great distance from t! boat. Allin front of the wheel house appears as though swept by a whirlwind.
