Illicit Whiskey Still Seized,

Officers of the Law Successfal

They Make a Big Spill. Souris, Dec. 24.

Excise officers J. C, Nash and 'T. Moore, Customs officer M. J. Foley, and constable Lavie raided MeCarthy’s illicit distillery at daylight this morning, and found all in readiness for an operation. The oflicers seized still, still head, worm and two goose- necks, and furnace door, and brought the articles into Souris station.

They also stove in two puncheons and ran off 180 gallons of fermented wash, ready for distilling. They found and seized a barrel of wash, also in readiness, in the upper part of the house, and emptied it out on the roadway.

The distiller, however, got away before the arriyghof the officers, through some secret inférmation,

Part of the apparatus was found in a barn underthe straw on another man’s property, and was evidently nearly new, having been used but once or twice since

Terrible Collision.

Pictev, Dee. 25. It is learned that a terrible collision oc- curred this morning between Valley and Union Stations, on the Pictou Branch of the J. C. R. The report is that James Hill, a brakeman, was very badly injured and may die.

A Robber Arrested. Hauirax, Dec, 23. Frank C. MecNeally, who robbed the Savings Bank at Saco, Me., of $279,000 in cash and securities, was arrestel here this morning.

He leaves eight children to mourn the loss of a loving father, He will be much and déservedly regretted by a large number of friends and relatives. Deceased was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, and emi- grated to this Island in 1819.
