Ex-Governor McDonald, of Ontario, severely criticized the bank management and said that the annual statement showed that unduely large advances have been made to some institutions, and he denounced the bank’s action in forcing Park's

(Special to thet Halifax Herald.) Orrawa, May 31, A great number of anecdotes and char- acteristic incidents connected with the premier’s life are given in current conversa- tion. It is related that Sir John entered a recent meeting of the cabinet smilingly re- marking that death was after him and that though he had overcome the enemy ia many struggles the end of the fight Was ap- proaching. The other day Mr. Mulock, M. P., went across the housg and spoke to the premier. A discussion had been going on in which he had taken part. The old man laughed and said: ‘‘Well, I can’t bother you fellows much more.”’ ; The wildest stories are afloat as to the in- tentionsof ministers and the Literal-Conser- vative party in the event of Sir John’s death or permanent incapacity. It need scarcely be said that the ministers have not met to discuss avy such question. The party has held no caucus, Sur Charles Tupper has not been sent for, There is, so far as can be learned, no truth in the re- port that Sir Charles has sailed for Canada. Nevertheless it could not be otherwise that during the present period of suspense there would be speculation and even earnest dis- cussion as to what steps should be taken if the government were left without a first minister and the party without a premier; but at this stage the talk is wholly specula- tive and the one prevailing wisb, now tak- ing the form of a faint hope, is that no suc- cessor to Sir John may be required. Specu- lative cabinet making has been extensively carried on across the House, though it is fair to say that there is no apparent anx- iety for their speculations to take practical form through the death of the premier. It is somewhat difficult to obtain a cleax idea of the nature of Sir John’s ailment ;: what is known is that there is some com- pression of the brain such as causes paraly- sis and is occasioned by the rupture or im-~ pairment of a blood vessel. The first at- tack of paralysis occured three days before that of Friday, the loss of the use of one arm and the partial paralysis of his legs was brief, and, though it occasioned alarm, it did not appear to indicate a crisis. After this attack and subsequent relly the premier continued to transact public business, and Jast Friday had a long dis- cussion with Sir John Thompson on matters of state as well as with two other ministers. The Minister of Justice found the Premier anxicrs to get at the bottom of things, and especially desirous to be informed as to everything that was taking place. : The second attack came that evening. It is now understvod, though it did not ap- pear to be known at the time, that part of the brain affected by theattack of Friday was not the eame as that where the weakness of vessels was shown un previous occasions, otherwise the patient would not have sur- vived so long. The physicians first gave out that the compression of the brain was

caused by a clot of blood. They said that in a young man with great vitality this clot
