—QGOn Thursday last, the legislature of Nova Scotia voted down by a majority of four the bill to extend the provincial electoral franchise to widows and spinsters now quaili- fied to vote under the municipal franchise.
— The Montreal Gazette remarks that the Liberals in Parliament should send a copy of Mr. Mercier’s farewell message and a sheet of clean paper to Sir Richard Cart- wright. They had more than one Jonah on their ship.
— Brome is a border county, and a farm- ing county, and Sir Richard Cartwright never spoke in it. Still Mr. Fisher was afraid to tackle it. Verily, as the Montreal Gazette remarks, these be dark hours for the look-to- Washington policy.

—The Montreal Gazette’s Ottawa corres- pondent reports that *‘ several of the Mari- time Province members, and especially those of Prince Edward Island, are not in- clined to regard very favorably a number of clauses in Hon. Mr. Tupper’s bill to amend the Fisheries Act, which deal with the subject of the 1 bster fisheries. The bill contemplates the imposition of a fee of $50 per packer and a cent for labelling each case, which would amount on the average to a thousand cases, ora total tax ef $60 perannum on each factory. Messrs. Mac- donald aud McLean state that these are restrictions which are totally unnecessary, and they hope to get the Minister of Marine and Fisheries to effect considerable modili- cations in the matter. They think that the present close season of thirty-five days is all that is required to build up the business. They also say that the clause in the present law preventing the taking ot lobsters under 9} inches in length is abortive in its effects, and it has been found impossible to carry it out. There is ample testimony to show that the short cluse season is the cause of the improvement: in the fishery, and is suffi- cient to keep it from being wiped out.”

The World readers were per- mitted to guess the name of the writer of a sentence published in fac-smile in that paper, and they hit upon about all the eminent men in the country. It turns oat to have been written by Carlyle Harris, the condemned murderer now in the New York Tombs.

THE ladies af the above Society gave entertainment iv the Hall at this place «1 Friday last, the 11th inst. Norwithsian? ing the very bad state of the roads, the hall was crowded and the ladies were well repaid for their trouble. The Rev S. James presided as the president. Mrs James was kept at home on account of illness in her family. The choir consisted of Miss Laura Roberts, organist; Mrs D Machon, Mra J Nicolle, Mrs W H Prowse, the Misses Sencebaughs, Nicolle, Roberta, Lelacheur, Ferguson, Brooks, Messrs. This brought the programme to a close, after which coffee, tea and cake were pass- ed around to the audience. After they all had satisfied the inner man, the balance of the cakes were suld at auction. Mr. James Lelacheur acted as auctioneer. The sum of $40 was realizsd; half of this amount is for the Parsonage, the balance for the Society. The ladies are to be congratulat- ed on the success of this their first social and we trust that this wiil be an induce- ment for them to give us more such enter- tainments inthe near future. Railway Meeting at Vigs.
As previously announced, a meeting was held in the Uigg Hall to discuss the best steps to be taken tu obtain the much needed accom- modation of a branch railway through Belfast and Murray Haibor. After the matter had been ventilated by able speeches from several of those yresent, the following resolution was submitted and passed :
Whereas, In view of the proposed tunnel across the Northumberland Straits becoming an accomplished fact, we would be precluded from deriviog any benefit that would result therefrom for want of a branch railway through this section of the Province, known as Belfast and Murray Harbor, which com- prises, in area and population, about one fifth of the Province.
And Whereas, The Federal Government derives a tangible benefit from the union of this Province with the Dominion, in that the revenue derived from the Province exceeds the expenditure by a considerable amount.
And Whereas, The Dominion Government in violation of the B. N. A. Act relating to railways and branch railways not of inter- provincial importance, has built or subsidized such Reilway.
And Whereas, By a return laid on the table of the Dominion House of Commons at its last session, itis shown that this Province is dis- criminated against, inasmach as, whilst $31,615,491 were given as subsidies since Confederation, this Province received only $96.000, and of 4265} miles subsidized only 12 were built in this Province, being only about one tenth of the money and number of miles this Province is entitled to, according to pop ulation.
Therefore Resolved, That a statement of the tacts be laid before the Dominion Govern ment by petition, praying for the constraction of this road or the granting of the usual sub- sidies,
Also moved and carried that the next meeting be held in Glen William on Saturday, the 19th March, inst., at 6 clock, p. m. Representatives and all interested invited to attend.

Sir Charles Tupper Speaks.
At the dinner of the Association of the Chambers of Commerce, held in London on the 9th inst., Sir Charles Tupper made the speech of the occasion concerning **Canada and her commercial resources.” The Eug- lish manufacturers and exporters, he said, were smarting under the hardship: of the McKinley tariff, and it would not be long before the people would show their loyalty to the integrity of the British empire by striking the United States a vital blow iu return. Canada was in favor of uniting her interests as closely as possible with those of the mother country. She knew she had a granary with capacity suffivient to supply Eagland’s needs. She couid, in fact, send to England all the wheat and flour which the latter needed for her great army of factory laborers. In exchange, Canada could take manufactured articles of the mother couatry. Above all things Canada wanted Englishmen from England te immigrate to her shore, and with their muscle and capital work her vast unde- veloped resources. By her present policy Canada prevented Boston and New York from becoming her commercial capitals, and with the »id of the home government she could still further encroach upon the pres- tige of these cities, and make one of her seaports the greatest outlet in the world for grain. Canada had soil and willingness to accomplish these results, and the time was ripe when she should receive the oppor- tunity to show the capabilities of ber terri- tory and people.
