- An opportunist is one who is quick to see opportunity and make the most of it. Sometimes it pays; Sometimes it doesn't pay. You sec often an opportunist sees only the opportunity but cannot see what it may lead to.

Most of the little folk of the Green Forest and the Green Mea- dows are opportunists. They have to he. sometimes opportunity is very short. and there isn't time to make sure of everything. some- times opportunity lingers, Then the wise are careful to find out and make sure that all is well.

All of his life Billy Mink has been an opportunist. Being quick it has very seldom gotten him into trouble..1t has gotten him very many good meals which had he not been an opportunist he would have missed. -It did this for him the day he left Laughing Brook to wander down the Big River. Finally, it. is always questionable to bid such a shabby four-card major suit as South held. West opened his fourth-highest diamond. south hoped that the lead was from the queen-jack, and so played low from dummy. but when East produced the queen. South saw no reason to hold up his king, so he won the trick. (He did nct,want the opponents to shut to spades.)

Declarer then tried the only plan that offered any reasonable hope- the club finesse. He led a low club and put in du:mmy's' ten. when that card held, he felt a little bet- ter. but of course he did not know that the queen was going to fall, so he now made a rather desper- ate effort to develop a heart trick. on the heart lead from dummy. East won with the blank king and returned a diamond. Now it was too late for south to recover-he could neither establish a heart nor get his full quota of club tricks, and so he he went down on. SW"! was unduly optimistic to try for a heart trick! His only substantial chance. after the club ten held. was to cash the club king. Then he could lead to the club jack, return to the diamond ace and cash in dummy'n clulb ace. The spade ace woul be the nu. filling trick.

water had finally gone ashore it little way above where bonglegs was standing in yhe wild rice walt- ing for a fish to come along. Billy climbed out on an old log and sat. on the end of it. He wasn't wet because you know he has a water- proof coat over his nice warm fur coat. g

He heard it scream and then an- other scream. There were two voices and both were angry. Those screams came from the "sky. He guessed before he even looked up what was happening somewhere high above his head He looked up to see two of the largest of the feathered folk high In the air above him. one was King Eagle: he was the largest. The other was Plunger the Osprey. Plunger was trying his best to fly above King Eagle, but couldn't. You know King Eagle is a wonderful flier. Besides. Plunger was carrying something. He was carrying a fish, King Eagle wanted that fish.

”Drop it!" screamed King Eagle. "Drop it!"

"Robber. screamed Plunger and dodged as King Eagle swooped at him.

Billy Mink chuckled. "Old Kind Eagle knows what he wants and he usually gets it. .319 sure does love fish, but he is a poor fisherman. He loves fish so much that he isn't fussy. I want my fish fresh caught. but he doesn't care. I've seen him eating fish .that I wouldn't even smell of," , "Drop it. drop it i" That was King Eagle. -

"Robber! Robber! It's my fish! I caught it." That -was Plunger screaming.

The two great birds were almost directly over Billy Mink. He had to tip his head back to look at them. and that is just what he was no- ing. King Eagle, his white head and white tail glistening in the sun. circled above Plunger and and- denly shot down straight at him. His great yellow claws were set to strike. Then Billy Mink saw some- thing glistening as it turned over and over in the air, falling straight toward him. He knew what it was. It was the fish. Plunger, with a last angry scream, had dropped the iish and dodged out of the way of King Eagle. Down, down. down fell the fish. And down. down, down shot King Eagle, hoping to catch it before it struck the water. He is very expert at catching things in the air.

But this time Plunger hadn't been high enough when he dropped the fish fcr King Eagle to catch it before it reached the water. It fell with a splash that sent a show- er of water over Billy Mink. King Eagle, coming so fast, had to sud- denly spread his great wings and gheck himself or he too would have struck the water. He did check himself and shot part and up. in- tending to turn and come back to pick up the fish. Billy Mink is an opportunist. When King Eagle came back the fish wasn't there.
