You have. perhaps, read the remuks in the GAZETTE and ISLANDER which called it l‘orth.l "rile hitter paper hesitated giving my reply publicity, and as I conceive it has come out strongly iii the proprietary inter- est, in its last editorial, 1 deem any further application to be entirely a work ufsupererogation. The GAZETTE has posi- tively refused.

So far from feeling the slightest hostility towards his Ex~ cellency, its the Ismnosn (I slander fl) seems to think, 1 would say—did it not appear like egotisrh to say so—tl'lat he shall have my warmest support, and, I feel confident, that of thousands besides, so soon as it shall clearly appear, from any public not or document of His Excellency's, that he has abandoan the deeply dangerous class legislation at pre- sent followed. When he shall see fit to do so, he will find a rich exchange in the approbation and support of those thou- sands—it truly be in the hour of danger—for the cringing flattery ofa servile press. At the same time, I will allow no man to cram down my throat, us good actions, those parts oins Excellelicy’s conduct of which 1 cannot approve. ’

THE SANDWICH ISLANDS.

Among the documents submitted to Congress by the President with his Message is a correspondence beiwecn Messrs. Haalilio and Richards, Agents from the l-laWaiian or Sandwich Islands, and our Secretary ol’Slate. The follow— ing passage from the letter oftlré Agents, contains informa- tion of'gratilying interest concerning the progress of the Islands in civilization and the comforts oflil'c, and the ad- 'antages off'riendly intercourse with the United States.— Boston Paper.

Twenty—three years ago the nation had not written lan- guage, and no character in which to write it. The language

form. The people had no acquaintance with Christianity, nor with the valuable institutions or usages of civilized life. Tile nation had no fixed form or regulations of Government, except as they were dictated by those who were in authority, or might by ally means acquire power. The rivht ofpro- perty was not acknowledged, and was therefore hilt partially enjoyed. There were no courts of Justice, and the will oi' the Chieftains was absolute. The property oftbreigners had no protection, except in the kind (liSpOSiliOll of‘iriilividnals. But, under the fostering influence, patronage and care ofhis Majesty, and that ofhis predecessors, the liincriaoe has been reduced to a visible and systematized form, aiid lbs now writ; tell by a large and respectable portion of the people. Schools have been established throughout his dominions

and are supported principally by the Government - and there: are but few among the younger people who are, unable to read. They have now in their own language a library em- bracing rl considerable variety of books-on a variety dfsub- jects, including the Holy Scriptures, works on natural his- tory, civil history, church history, geography political economy, mathematics, and statue law; besides a bomber of elementary books. A regular rnonarchical governnielithas been organized, of a limited and representative character. A code of laws, both civil and criminal, has been enacted and published.

It has, moreover, been tbe‘unilorm pracqce of consuls and commercial agents resident in his Majesty s dam-intone, and also ofall commanders of national .vessels vrsrting those domiiiions, to demand all that protection, lmtlrof person and of property, which is delimadcd of sovereign and inde- pendent States, und this, his Majesty believes, had been duly and efficiently extended. While, therefore, all is demanded of' his Government, and all is rendered by it, which is de- manded of'or rendered by the Governtnerrtsof sovereign and independent States, he feels that he has a right tovexpect his State to beackliowledged as such, and thus beforiual-ly received into the general .conipact of sovereign nations. In the request which his Majesty hereby makes to the Govern- ment of the United States, he has, of course, for ins direct object, the promotion oftlle interests oflns own kingdom; but be is also very fully convinced that the _rlnportant interests of all the great commercial nations will also be materially subserved by his dominioris relriuililug, us they have hitherto been, independent. ‘

Their position is such, that they constitute the great centre oftbe whale fishery for most oftlie world. They are on the principal line of'communicat’ion between the western con- tinent ol'Aincrica and the eastern continent of Asra; and such are the prevailing winds on lllal‘OCflnl), that all vessels rcquiring repairs or supplies, either of pi'OVisions or ofwatcl', naturally touch at those Islands, whether the vessels soil from Crilninbia River, on the liorth, or from the for distant ports of Mexico, Central America, or Peril, upon the south; and it should be further added, that there is no otlierplace in all that part of the Pacific ocean, where repairs to vessels can be made to so good an advantage, or supplies be obtained iii slicli abundance and on so favourable [cl‘llIS.

His Majesty wishes also to remind the Government of the United States that the amount of property belonging to their citizens, which is either landed at or enters the various har- bours nild roadstcads of his dorniniorls, and consequently more or less dependent on the protection oftlre Government, :annot be less than from five to seven millions of dollars annually. This property lies in some ninety or a hundred whaling ships and their cargoes, and iii some twelve or fifteen merchant vessels, besides also a considerable arnorlnt of other property belonging to American citizens on shore. At some seasons there has not been less than three or four mil- lions of dollars’ worth of American property, and‘ some fourteen hundred American citizens at the same time, at the various ports ofthe Island, requiring, coriscqelintly, in some degree, the protection of his Majcst ’; and he has the hop- piiless of believing that efficient and satisfactory aid has always been extended to those who have required it. Iii evidence corrobo ~ative of many of'tl.e lhcts herein stated, the undersigned do not hesitate to refer to the documentary evidence, which they believe must be among the papers in your Department of State, recently furnished by masters of national vessels, biit more especially by the United States Commercial Agent residing at Honolulu.
