Tue Province of Quebec has, it appears, 47 butter factories, 23 combined butter and cheese factories, amd 278 factories of cheese only. Weareunable to give the figures for Ontario for the reason that neither ot the two Associations of Dairymen in the Province has embodied the statistics in its recent reports We have the impression, however, that the number of butter factories in Ontario is less than 25, while the number of cheese factories in the Province must be nearly a thousand. —Toronto Globe.

A Frescn Deserter Surctpges 1x HAtrrax. On Sunday, Leon DUucrose, a young deserter from the French army, shot himself in an Upper Water Street hotel early in the morn- ing and died half an hour after. He retired early. Between two and three o'clock two pisto! shots were heard in his room, and on the door being burst open he was found on his bed with all his clothes on, blood spurting from the mouth and nostrils, and a self-cock ing revolver clatched in his right hand. He was living but breathing heavily. An exam- ination showed that he had discharged the first shot imto his mouth, holding the muzzle between his lips, and the ballet had pene- trated the base of the brain, cutting through the great arteries leading to the top of the head. The unbappy soldier left a card on which he had written a short note in French telling his real name and of his desertion, saying he was Without money and dying cf hunger, and asking that the news of his death be sent to France. Among his effects were found papers giving his age as twenty- four.

After tea was served, a magic lantern exhibition was given. Then, after a few remarks were made by the minister, in reference to the condition and wants of the school, and, after singing the doxology, the audience dispersed, ap- parentiy well pleased. At a meeting of the ‘‘ Civie Protection Association,’ held last.evening, in Scott's Hall, the following Resolutions were unani- mously carried ; —

Resolvel,—Thrt we, as members of this Society, should feel proud of the suecess which has atten ed our efforte in the past in favor of the judicious management of Wity matters, but that we sbeuld redouble our efforts to place such men in power a grill relieve the city, as far as possible, from present enor- mous rate of taxation, and the tutrodaction of such laws as may be necessary for that pur- pose.

Resolved,--That this meeting approves of the conduct of the Mayor of this city, and those members of the City Council unfor- tunately in the minority at the Board, for their efforts during the last year in behalf of those measures advocated by this Society.
