Sevaw Buryep To DreatH.—A squaw of the Micmac tribe, 82 years of age, named Margaret Butmen, was burned to death at Fort Lorne on Wednesday last. Those with whom she was camped left her in charge, while they went but a short distance away. On returning they found the poor old woman in flames, and befere they could be extin- guished she was so shockingly burned that she expired a few hours later, after suffering great agony. It was thought she was taken with a fit, and while in that state {ell or rolled into the fire. —Ezx.

New Cuvrenes 1n Montron.—The Free taptists have their new church at the corner of Highfield and St. George streets about plastered. It is expected it will be dedicated next month. Messrs. Stewart and Day are the contractors. The first Baptist church congregation in Moncton are also proceeding with the erection of a church in the High street district, so called. A large number of adherents of the church reside in that section and as it is some distance from’ the main church in town the erection of a new edifice was considered advisable.

Canapa Rartway News Company.—The last number of the Ganada (azette announces that letters patent have been issued incor- orating C. R. Chisholm, W. Drysdale, R. White, James Stewart, J. N. Greenshields and H. J. Chisholm, under the name of the “‘Canuda Railway News Company (limited),” for the purpose of printing and publishing books, periodicals and newspspers throughout the Dominion, with power to sell the same on railways and steambeats, and also for the general purpose of advertising especially by show cards in railway cars, steamboats and stations. The authorized capital stock is $50,000, divided into two thousand shares of twenty-five dollars. The principal place of business will be Montreal.

THe steamer City of Washington, which arrived at Havana from Vera Cruz, and which was to sail for New York on Satur- day, is kept isolated and under observation in the harbor owing to the fact that there are twenty-seven sick persons among her passengerg snd crew. One death occurred in the passage from Mexico. The charac- ter of the sickness is not well defined, but it is believed to have been caused by drink- ing water taken on board VeraCruz. When the steamer left the port there was no sickness on board. When she touched at Progress five or six cases of sickness were reported and the number increased to twenty-six on the passage to Havana. The Board of Health has declared the sickness on board the steamer City of Washington to be yellow fever. The suffer- ers have therefore been sent to the hospital. All the patients belong to the crew except two who were passengers. The ship's baker and doctor died last night The person who died at sea was the machinist. ‘The steamer has been fumi- gated and will sail to-morrow for New York.

Resolutions were adopted at the meeting of the Central Labor Union to-day, en- dorsing the strikers, and offering financial assistance to the Telegraphers.

Cuicaco, July 22.

The day force of messenger boys em- ployed by the Western Union Telegraph Co., left the oftice in a body this afternoon, thus stimulating the striking operators. A force of fifty operators is on duty at the Western Union office to-day, and business is reported clearand little delay. It is rumored the check clerks will strike to- morrow.

A train on the C. & W. Railroad was caught in a tornado, yesterday afternoon, fifteen miles south of Green Bay, and nearly wrecked. The rain poured through the cars and drenched the passengers. The French Consul at Palma deMajorea denies the recent statement that cholera had broken out at that place.

There were 140 deaths from cholera at Cairo on the 19th inst. Two regiments of British troops have gone to Suez.

The Burmese embassy have arrived at Venice, where they are undergoing quar- antine. La France asserts’ that they will make a formal appeal for a French pro- tectosate over Burmah.

In the House of Commons on the 20th Campbell Bannerman, secretary of the Admirality, in reply to a question by Mr. Bartlett, declined to speak concerning the movements, size and number of the men- of-war which have been ordered to Mauri- tius or Madagascar. He described the question as an improper one. His answer was received with cheers.

The very exciting contest for the Kola- pore Cup, which always brings to the fore the crack shots of the contending parties, was concluded on the 18th. There were five competitors, and the shooting between Canada and the Mother Country was so even as to cause the greatest amount of excitement. England, however, proved too strong for her hardy offspring, and carried off the coveted prize with a score of 698. Canada came next with 679, only nineteen behind. Jersey was third with 636, follow- ed by Guernsey with 621, and India took the ‘‘wooden spoon” with a score of only 514,

The Standard’s correspondent at Cairo says that unless the English authorities promptly take the direction of affairs, the checking of the spread of cholera will be hopeless. Even the simplest sanitary ar- rangements are neglected. The funeral system is most obnoxious. Corpses encased in very slight coffins are carried through the crowded streets on men’s shoulders. The clothes of persons dying in hospitals are often stripped off and taken for wear- ing purposes by relatives. While a man stricken with cholera was on his way, yes- terday, in a cart to the hospital the driver stopped at a cafe and gave the invalid a drink from a water bottle used by customers of the place. A few minutes afterwards the sick man died. The only precaution taken in this case was to sprinkle a little chloride of lime on the corpse,
